People wonder endlessly why crappy Mary Sue fics are ridiculously popular too. I have the edges of a theory that young (age is not relevant in what counts as "young") fans are just too inexperienced to know what goodfic is so they go through the early stage of their fanfic reading experience fangirling every vaguely interesting fic that comes along, no matter the quality, and in some cases find the lower quality ones easier to get involved in.

I know that some of the fic I read in my early days was execrable in quality, and I didn't get online until I was in my 20s, and I had a history of reading novels behind me even then (that might have been what kept me away from the worst fics out there, but quite a bit of crap still got through).

Personally I say please don't quit the fics you believe are your better works. It's up to you what you do with the one you think is worse, but finish up the good ones.

I think you're on to something here. I know when I first got into fandom, I read *everything* and pretty much liked *everything* LOL because it was all so new and nothing was a cliche yet. My fanfic tastes have become more discerning over time, and when I go back and try to read favorites from those first couple years in fandom, I am often left boggling at myself because I would never rec a lot of those stories now 9 years later.

I remember a time when I thought people who claimed it was so hard to find good fics on FFN were overstating the case a bit, because I had no trouble. Maybe it was a bit because my tolerances were less discerning than they have become in the years since.

These days I can barely even look at the main lists on FFN because I don't have the patience to wade through the crap to find the diamonds (or even just the pretty quartz).

FFN has never been a big part of my fannish experience, but I know exactly what you mean. :)

Like a good friend once told me, you have to eat a fair amount of sushi to know the good stuff when you taste it.

That's a great analogy. ;)
