I really wanna know what the fic in question was!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too!

OP, wanna give us a hint?

And sorries, the podfic was actually nearly 5 hours. I glanced at the wrong one when I wrote the secret, apparently. OTL

I totally get this! I love podfic in general and there are a few stories I can listen to but not read but this is the one where I saw the most difference. There's something awkward about it when you read it but the podficcer reads it really well.

Know what'd be super awesome? A rec list of podficcers that do it right ♥

sorry sorry. For the most part km stoked that you found another way to get through a fic rather than dropping it. I don't even know why it makes me happy other than giving validation to the idea that audio fic is definitely useful.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded! We should start a group here on DW and get people to add names. I'm so sick of trying to listen to fics only to find readers with distractingly bad microphone quality, or stilted styles, or who don't bother doing the characters' voices. I've found a few fics on YouTube that are absolutely AMAZING (some of which even go the extra mile and not only add music, but sound effects too!) but it really is hit or miss - more misses than hits, too. :(

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
as someone who listens to a lot of things on audio, I prefer a story where someone isn't doing voices to one where they're done shitty. voices are really really hard to do right.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
so I actually prefer podfic to reading (and I also learn better through listening) so take this with a grain of salt: I haven't ever minded an accent (except for german. sorry tinypinkmouse, I have no idea what you're saying!) and my bar for sound quality is: is there any distracting background sound?

this is lifted off recently played list on my current mp3 player full of podfic. there's much more out there in fandoms I'm not a part of -- there's a truly disgustingly massive tonne of stargate fic.

fayjay (not only awesome but prolific)
knight_tracer
dodificus
superstituousme (I listened to the epic-length A Kept Boy)
luzula (generation kill)
chemm80 (generation kill)
rhea314 (she recorded the epic-length ADSverse for Lois Bujold's universe. it's big enough that the story can be considered a universe of its own: read/listen to it without fandom context you'll still enough.)

shout of to the newest recording of 16 Days in September a generation kill podfic on which five awesome podficcers collaborated on.

I can go on and on. I've been an avid listener of podfic for about 3 years now so if I took my time I could probably make sure a comprehensible list.

I hear people snark about podfic quality but I really don't get it -- I've heard bad sound quality maybe 5-10% of the time and only once was someone's accent literally incomprehensible to me. Maybe it's because I tend to stick to epic fic unless it's a favorite fandom?

I listen to a lot of audiobooks too and frankly I've found fandom podficcers are some of the most enjoyable and high quality narrators I've heard. No hyperbole. Some audiobook narrators can be aw-ful.

Seconding fayjay. She is THE reader that got me into podfic in the first place, and is still my favorite reader after all this time.

I adore podfic because it's a great way to get a dose of fandom in while I'm working on art projects. Hours and hours of entertainment that ensures I don't get distracted from my work.

I'm super late as always, but in addition to those mentioned above, these are some of my favourite podfic readers:

busaikko
pennyplainknits
cookiemom6067
dapatty (though she has a way of reading that I have to be in the mood for)
reena_jenkins
sly hostetter
eosrose
exmanhater
winkingstar

Yeah, I agree that reading stories aloud sometimes makes them surprisingly smoother. I just noticed it today when I was doing it to my own fanfic.

IDK, it nonplusses me a bit. In my head it should be the other way round.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I know exactly what you feel. I hate whiny comments in written form, love them with graphics!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a really popular teen wolf fic writer who I can't stand the writing of, and I know there are podfics of her stuff (like I said, really popular, and even when popular writers aren't my thing I don't usually find them unreadable).

I'm going to try this. I feel weird saying who it is though, so we'll never know if it was the same one!

saw your comment above

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not the same one. I wasn't aware that fic was so popular, actually :\

Re: saw your comment above

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
OP.

When I was first getting into the fandom I swear I saw this fic recommended everywhere. And then I checked out the AO3 stats (700+ comments, 2000+ kudos, 600+ bookmarks-- which is amazing for AO3), and was pretty much convinced after that.

It's not, like, terribly written or anything. It's just that the writing is somewhat awkward and not really all that solid, so I had a hard time getting into it. I enjoyed the podic, so obviously the fic was good. It was just the written form that bothered me for the aforementioned reasons.

But considering its popularity, my opinion is obviously in the minority.

Anyway, I'm beyond curious to know what fic you're referring to, BTW.

Re: saw your comment above

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think taking AO3 popularity as a gauge of fic quality is a mistake in TW fandom. I feel like it's the first fandom to really converge on AO3, so you can get insane numbers of hits on things that, in any other fandom, wouldn't be exceptional. ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE WIPS

I'm not a fan of entanglednow, but I don't think it's awkward writing. I just saw her stuff recced so much I forced myself to read it, and her plots/characterizations really don't work for me. It's possible a good podfic could change that.

Re: saw your comment above

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm starting to get that. I have conflicted feelings about that, tbh. On one hand, as a Kindle user I LOVE AO3 (as it generally makes my life easier). On the other hand, I really don't want it to become another FFN.

As for Entanglednow... her TW fic "By Any Other Name" is another (popular) story I had to listen to as a podfic because I couldn't make it through the actual fic itself. And it's not that it's poorly written or anything. I just couldn't, for some reason.

I really liked her fic "Lock All The Doors Behind You" (but then I love feral!Derek fic, so I'm probably biased), and her "Milkshakes and Matchsticks" series was good, too. I'm iffy about the rest of her fics, though. To me, her works tend to be really hit or miss (not just TW fic, either).

OT, but RECS.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Can you guys rec me your top three favorite TW fics? Yeah, this is off-topic, I know, but IMO there's always a time and place for recs in fandom.

I'll start.

1) Our Hearts Are Tigers by skoosiepants [sterek]
http://archiveofourown.org/works/698681

2) (Sacred) In the Ordinary by idyll ♥ [sterek]
http://archiveofourown.org/works/406369

3) Wolf Whistle (series) by ashinann [sterek]
http://archiveofourown.org/series/25639

...and just because I only rec'd Sterek fics....

4) Roaring In My Heart (series) by hart_and_sole [jackson/scott]
http://archiveofourown.org/series/13951

Re: OT, but RECS.

Can someone explain the appeal of (Sacred) In The Ordinary? I just don't get it. I love the other two but I've never made it through more than a chapter or so of Sacred - and I've tried both reading and listening.

My favourites are:

1. Live with the Wolves and You Learn to Howl (series)
http://archiveofourown.org/series/23867

2. will to follow through
http://archiveofourown.org/works/574941

3. I Wish That I Could See You Soon
http://archiveofourown.org/works/574361

They're all Stiles/Derek (because that's how I roll). #1 has a fabulous Sheriff and pack in general, #2 has brilliant Lydia and Danny, #3 is just really sweet with lots of long distance communication and slow developing relationship.

I have never seen "spelling, punctuation, and grammar" abbreviated as SPaG. Is this a common acronym I wasn't aware of?

Also, I've never listened to a pod!fic. I think I remember people posting links to them in the early days of Dean/Castiel, but at first I didn't understand what they were, and then I just had no interest. But I may have to give it a try now. Are there any sites/comms for them or are they just scattered everywhere in various fandom comms?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-03-19 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen SPaG before but I don't think it's too common? There are podfics everywhere but maybe try A03 at first.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT.

Really? I've always considered it to be a pretty popular acronym as I literally see it everywhere. Particularly in beta-oriented communities, though, so perhaps that's why.

As for podfiction:
