Oh gosh, I adore Branson. Can't really explain it, but I do.

I could see Sybil experimenting, maybe? But then you look at what happens to Thomas and wonder if even she'd be daring enough to try.

Well Gwen wanted to go off and be a secretary so it wouldn't have wored out in canon, logistically.

BUT IN MY HEAD, Gwen stays at Downton and eventually Sybil gets married and takes Gwen with her as her ladies maid and they have a life long affair.

That's actually really cute I never thought of that. The three of them were adorbs in the S2 finale.

That would actually be super-duper awesome. I just rewatched part of S1 with my brother and I realized how much I loved and now miss all the Sybil/Gwen interactions.

Branson was really a dick to her. I couldn't stand him and his interactions with Sybil.

But I like him a lot better now that Sybil is dead and therefore not around for him to be a dick to.

Yeah, he always acted really controlling and condescending toward her. I really did not like their relationship at all.

I hear that a lot from people in the fandom, so I guess it's a very common reading but I just never saw it. She has about 95% of the power in that relationship before they're married, and after their married we barely see them together.

(I know there's the "don't be disappointing" comment, but nobody in DA ever shuts up about disappointment, and Sybil was actually being really disappointing at that point.)

This so much. I shipped the fuck out of them in season 1 and then Branson came along and screwed everything up. Ugh I hate him.

I liked the idea of Sybil/Branson, and I came into the show wanting to like them since I'd been spoiled a bit. But their actual relationship disappointed me. I like Branson in general, but with Sybil he seemed controlling and presumptuous, and I never really got a sense that Sybil loved him. Apparently she did, but I didn't see it in how she interacted with him.

This is generally how I feel, though I wasn't spoiled for it. I liked their interactions in S1, but during S2, I got the feeling that the writers just didn't know how to write them and had too many plotlines going on, so they just had them go in circles and have the same argument in the garage in every episode, and Branson's dickishness was a byproduct of that. I liked them more in S3, until tragedy struck (though I do love Branson afterward, too).
