Wow.

So apparently 4chan has a /lgbt/ board now.

It's... it's about what you'd think.

Well, they've had a gay board for a while now, and there's been demand for something like this, so it's not too surprising.

It's not that surprising that it would be terrible, either, although I can't necessarily predict the way in which it's terrible - has /pol/ invaded it yet, or is it just run-of-the-mill 4chan terribleness?

...self-hating gays, transphobia and biphobia?

Aside from obvious trolls (which will probably peter out or get 404'd) there's a lot of antifeminism.

...antifeminism..in 4chan? NOOOOOOOO

I checked out the 'let's pretend' thread and it was entertaining.

Making a board for "respectful discussion" about lgbt issues on 4chan sounds like SUCH A FANTASTIC IDEA.

Re: Wow.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
i spent like an hour on there earlier today. i don't know why. it was like a vortex that sucked me in. arguing with herp derp gays who didn't think we ~needed~ the LGBT label anymore was fun in a perverse way.

>fun in a perverse way.

You wrote the boards epithet on the day it was created. Fitting.

/co/ is probably more gay than that.

Is it full of terrible or is it full of porn? I could see it going either way. Or both ways.

I don't know what compelled me to go to 4chan today, and I saw it. God, did I saw it.

It sucked so hard it ripped a hole in Paradox Space and turned inside out. It wasn't even fun, it was just a troll masturbation fest.

It is pretty much what I expected it to be. As in not completely vile, which is what I'm guessing people who don't normally frequent more than one board wouldn't expect?

Plus, as a new board, I'm mostly just gonna check out the general atmosphere after the newness has dropped, and it's not got the influx of easy mode trolling.

It's all going to be easy mode trolling.

That's the thing about 4chan these days - it's not morally vile or shocking anymore. It's mostly just shitty.

Give it a few weeks. Only the persistent trolls will stay. Then it'll just be a toned down /pol/ with rainbows. And maybe a bit like /adv/.

"That's the thing about 4chan..."
I think that depends on which boards you're talking about since the culture in each one can be completely different from the one viewed as being sitewide. While I can't stand /v/ anymore (and don't know why I used to tbh), never liked /b/ or /r9k/, I will pretty much always love /ck/, /cm/, and /u/.

Re: Wow.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
a "toned down /pol/" is not exactly a description designed to fill me with confidence...

It's certainly true that it can very immensely from board to board, but I think it's actually very hard for individual board cultures to maintain themselves for long - there's a tendency for all of them to come towards the same point, which is mostly shitty and trollish - an entropy-like effect that pretty much leads almost all boards to suck eventually. I've pretty much stopped visiting 4chan entirely in the last couple months (mostly because I've had to accept, after a long period of denial, that my once-home board has pretty much passed the point of no return and just sucks now).

/ck/ is definitely one of the brighter spots along with /trv/, both very good boards that I mostly enjoyed. and perhaps /cm/ and /u/ are able to maintain some sort of distinctiveness. But I think over the long term, the demographic realities of who posts on the board, the prevalence of anonymity, and the more or less total absence of moderation combine to mean that, over the long term, it's really hard for any board to maintain a decent level of quality.
