But this series/character/genre is *SUPPOSED* to be about...

Inspired by a thread a couple days ago: what's the most annoying "but it's not /supposed/ to be like this" whiny criticism of a fictional something-or-other that someone just didn't like and wasn't satisfied with simply saying "I don't like it" that you've ever encountered?

I can't count the number of instances of this that made me roll my eyes. People whining about the wizarding world in Harry Potter not looking as peachy to fifteen-year-old characters as it did to eleven-year-old characters. People whining about the Doctor being more messed-up and troubled in nuWho than in Old Who. People whining about how interpersonal relationships in Modern Age superhero comics don't work the way they did in the Silver Age. People whining about characters daring to suffer emotional aftereffects from bad experiences. People incapable of wrapping their head around the idea that a character who used to be douchey cleaned up her act and now people aren't treating her like a douche anymore.

Any other specific ridiculous /supposed to/ arguments you've encountered in your fandoms?

"There's TOO MANY Pokemon now, only the first 151 count!"

Drives me up the wall.

Argh, thiiiis. (IMO, Gen 5 has some of the best Pokémon designs in the whole series.)

Yeah, I'm not sure how anyone can look at say, Chandelure, which has got to have one of my favourite designs in the series, and think it's worse design-wise, than stuff like Muk and Voltorb.

Given that Silver Age relationships were kind of fucked up at times, it baffles me that people would actually complain.

People whining about the detectives' personal lives being shown in the Law & Order spin-offs. "THE ORIGINAL WAS A STRAIGHT PROCEDURAL SO THE WHOLE FRANCHISE SHOULD BE STRAIGHT PROCEDURALS." I mean, sometimes they do go too far with it (I've carped about this here before, but Benson's boyfriend should not be a season-long ~mystery), but they established back in season 1 of SVU that the detectives personal lives were going to be a factor. If you hate it that much, why are you still watching 14 years later?

"This story sucks because even though it's already been established that Samus has PTSD, she should have already gotten over it" and "she didn't overreact every time she saw Ridley, so this game story sucks".

Way to marginalize a potentially life-altering condition and not understand that PTSD *doesn't alway trigger*.

Reference to Metroid Other M, btw.

Every time some idiot Whovian tries to whine about how "wah wah this is not what Doctor Who is about", my answer is to go "*AHEM* PERTWEE ERA! YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID"

(for non-oldskoolers, the bulk of the five-year-long Pertwee era was a fantabulous The Avengers knockoff which consisted of the Doctor being stranded on 20th century Earth with a nonfunctional TARDIS and working for UNIT)
