Dying breed? Depends where you live - it's vastly more common to drive a manual car here in the UK than to drive an automatic. Not sure about the Continent but pretty sure it's the same in Ireland too. Sales of manual cars always trump automatics.

The entire Europe drives on manual. I don't think I've seen more than two cars on automatic in my life.

Most asian countries drive mostly sticks as well.

I got weird looks from my Japanese co-workers when I said I wanted a manual car but having learnt in the UK it seemed natural. Japanese driving school did require mandatory automatic practice which I didn't enjoy as I kept reaching for the stick/pressing the invisible clutch. My instructor was highly amused.

Glad to see this, I was reading the thread and feeling a bit baffled. I know very few people in the UK who drive an automatic car. Personally I don't like them, I've driven them, but feel a lot more control with my manual gearbox.

I have a couple of friends who have those cars that can be either, I'd like one of those, auto in heavy traffic, then manual otherwise.
