Stick shift drivers unite!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I get so much respect from mechanics and car dealers, and men in general think it's impressive to meet a woman who drives stick. No one ever asks to borrow my car, but they rely on me as one of the few people they know who can drive the shitty old pickup/slick sports car/moving van/etc. Once you learn, it becomes very easy and, well, automatic do it.

Agreed! When I was a kid I remember my parents stopping to help a young couple get their pickup truck out of a snowy ditch. The girlfriend was petite and pretty much useless for pushing the back end of the truck, and didn't know how to drive a standard. Her boyfriend couldn't drive and push at the same time, so had we not come along, they would've been royally screwed. As it was, she still sat on the side of the road, completely useless, as my parents helped the guy get out. I decided right then and there I needed to learn to drive stick, because I never wanted to be that girl.

High-five! I bought my first car not knowing how to drive stick. I still remember the adrenaline rush from taking her out of my neighborhood the first time. I had to self teach myself.
