How do you retract ill-advised stanning?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I spent the last two months stanning the Moffat era of Doctor Who and defending it against everyone who complained about it, including insinuating that they were reading too much into things, taking things too seriously, confusing "different" with "bad" and trying to handwave away (or fastidiously ignore) criticisms.

Last week, I rewatched everything from the s5 premiere to the last Christmas special and I realized...a lot of things kind of really rubbed me the wrong way that I just didn't see in that light before.

So, because I was less invested in protecting my MOFFAT IS GREAT EVERYONE GTFO perception, I read some critiques of the sexism and characterization and plotting issues and now I'm wincing and really embarrassed at some of the shitty excuses and avoidance I engaged in to stan for Moffat. Except I did it under my username and everyone knows and...I don't know what to do or how to explain that I changed my mind and I was wrong and my arguments were shitty. Does anyone else know what this is like or have advice on how I should go about this?

I'd probably just flat out start reblogging (I just assumed you're on tumblr - weird) commentary on what rubbed you the wrong way with maybe a note of explanation at the end of two or three.

Easy: "Wow, guys. After a rewatch I realized you were right about a lot of this stuff. Sorry I was such a stan!"

Yeah, I'd write a thing saying, you know, "Sorry I was such a stan, y'all were right." That's what you do. You were in the wrong, so you apologize, and you learn some lessons from your mistake, some things to do differently next time.

A few lessons I would suggest - one, don't get involved in dumb internet slapfights in the future. They're always dumb and never profitable for people involved and learning to disengage from them and not get over-invested is a really, really good skill to have. And, two, if you must get involved in a dumb internet slapfight, at least have the good sense to do it anonymously.

It depends on where you were doing this, on tumblr? On livejournal? On certain communities?

If it's like your personal blog/tumblr/whathaveyou you could just go into what you're saying here where you did a rewatch and changed your mind. It doesn't have to be a complex explanation just say "Well I rewatched the Moffat era and I think I can see where some of these complaints are coming from now."

It's really not a huge deal, perceptions of stories can change and we can all be wrong about our initial interpretations. Who fandom also has a tendency to make the best person get into "NO YOU'RE WRONG AND I'M RIGHT" arguments because sometimes that's just how the conversations devolve. Don't feel too bad about it.

Write a substantive post entitled something to the effect of "why I changed my mind" and explain why you stanned Moffat in the first place, why you didn't see the flaws before, what rubbed you the wrong way upon rewatch, and why you understand the criticisms now. If you're on LJ, link it on your sidebar. Then act naturally. Don't be embarrassed to explain to anyone who questions that 'yeah, sorry, I was wrong and I changed my mind'. People are allowed to change their minds.

Also, don't repeat the process by mindlessly stanning RTD or mindlessly bashing everything about Moffat whether it's bad or not or getting as super-invested and blinkered as you were before.

Seconding what everyone above has said. There's nothing wrong with saying "oops I see now that I was wrong." It's not hypocritical to change your mind.

Also, you might want to stay away from some of the pits of Who fandom. The Whovian mentality of "NO, X IS HOW IT IS MEANT TO BE AND Y IS JUST PLAIN WRONG BECAUSE REASONS" is really fucking godawful.

Find people who take arguments about Doctor Who less personally. If people can't handle that you changed your mind, they aren't worth being too close to in the first place.

You'll probably end up with better friends!

Seconding what everyone else here has said.

Personally, I'd be pretty impressed at someone who could admit that they were wrong and their feelings had changed.

idk the fandom, but your explanation here sounds fine to me as an explanation to the fandom

What everyone else said. Also, I wouldn't worry about it too much since any anti-Moffat people who were annoyed by your earlier stanning are probably pleased that you're no longer stanning him. And as long as you say you've changed your opinions, anyone who tries to fling up your old opinions to insult/demean you are plain jerks.
