(Anonymous) 2013-03-21 12:06 am (UTC)(link)why pokemon in particular?
i'm not part of the communnity disclaimer here, but from what i've heard smogon's generally pretty hierarchical, from what i understand. it takes a while to get known and you have to do things just right to do that. plus there's the whole thing where pokemon's serious business and for the most part you have to have at least some skill in whatever you're doing to get attention. and being a dick's more tolerated. i mean, that works for some people, but more laid back fun isn't the focus of the place.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-21 12:47 am (UTC)(link)From what I've seen from lurking, there's a lot of staff members (over 15), but only a few actually do moderation duties. I know of one in particular that actively participates in conversations and is generally pleasant. The majority of the staff, however, seems to not do anything, and the ones that do only join into conversations to reply sarcastically to newbie members or flame members with opinions they don't like. People who get along with these staff members tend to get away with things that the average member doesn't.
The forums themselves are also heavily-biased towards comic artists who are already popular (the forum has written stories and let's play-like screenshot runs, but comics are definitely the most popular). It's difficult to get your run noticed by the community, and now that the staff is running a weekly feature of runs, it's even more difficult because if you're not featured, it's not worth bothering with your run.
The staff tends to make empty promises on features they're going to improve, and very few see the light of day (such as accessibility issues and remodels/cleanups of various sections). This previous year, they moved all of the runs that weren't Pokemon games (like Fire Emblem) or weren't "nuzlocke-runs" (like one-Pokemon runs or single-type runs) into a new section called "Other Adventures." The way they went about this made anyone whose run got moved feel inferior and "not worthy of being called a nuzlocke," creating a lot of drama. The runs placed in there get hardly any views compared to the main sections, proving the point. The staff later apologized for this, and stated that after the yearly "Nuzlocke Awards" (which are basically popularity contests for runs that all members can nominate and vote in), they would have one specifically for the Other Adventures. This never came into being, showing that the staff is still biased against them. Which is a shame, because there are many good runs that would deserve the recognition, but can't because they don't follow the "rules".
Members come and go frequently, because if you can't make it popular there early on in your stay, you're not going to get popular. There's over 17000 members, but only about 200 online at any time, if that says anything. I myself found no point in even trying and just go there to read a few series.
