Re: Fandoms that stay with you.
Oh no! No worries. I am fine! I was just remembering the past and my love of Tenchi/Ryoko and it gave me all the ~feelings~ I'm a tough cookie!
Sorry, it was the video store near the grocery store. It wasn't a video store in a grocery store. So they had an OK collection of anime. I remember watching Maze, I Dream of Mimi, Slayers, and some other odd ends from there.
I haven't seen GPX either or the spinoff. It would be weird to watch Ryoko and co be in love with a guy who is not Tenchi in GPX. Her/their love for Tenchi is such a driving point in all the different forms of the series. I have so much to watch and rewatch too!
I love Petite Princess Yucie and Princess Tutu. PPY is about a 17 year old girl stuck in the form of a 10 year old child. She needs to win the Princess contest and get the eternal tiara so she can make her wish to grow up (which of course revolves around a bunch of trials she must face). It sounds kinda sketchy writing it down, but it's not I swear! It's actually a very sweet story about friendship and love. Me and my friend watched it and were a mess of tears by the end.
Princess Tutu is about a duck who makes a wish to be a girl so she can protect the one she loves. The first half of the anime follows Duck/Ahiru as she finds shards of her loves heart (who happens to be a prince from a fairy tale). The second part continues in that vein, but gets a lot darker and it so damn good and really changed the way I viewed magical girl anime.
A newer one is Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It's a very dark anime with amazing animation. It's about a group of girls who have to decide if they want to strike a deal with a creature named Kyuubei, to become magical girls. If they do make the deal, they will be granted one wish. But is the cost of becoming a magical girl worth their wish?
I love all three of them in different ways. PPY is made for a younger crowd, but I still love it. Princess Tutu and PMMM are darker, but vastly different animes and tackle different subjects/tropes.
I'm happy to chat with you too! I miss have anime chats with people and talking about the classics. What are your favs?
Re: Fandoms that stay with you.
(Anonymous) 2013-03-21 05:11 am (UTC)(link)Oh, I'm glad then. Talking about all of this is giving me those same feelings! Really makes me want to find some Tenchi/Ryoko fanfiction to read! A longshot, but have any recs? I've never really read any Tenchi fanfics, and I know I've missed out on a lot of fic.
I've never seen any of those anime, but I have heard of them. Well, except Slayers, and I've only seen a bit of the first series. Did you find any hidden gems at the video store?
Tenchi Muyo GXP focuses on entirely different character and has a different harem of women, so you wouldn't see Ryoko falling in love with anyone else. The Tenchi Muyo characters only show up for a couple or episodes from what I hear.
Petite Princess Yucie! I've seen the first episode of it, but only because it came on a dvd that came with Newtype USA. That was so long ago. Damn, I miss Newtype USA! Such a shame that it's gone. I remember enjoying what I saw of it and the opening theme and ending them are really catchy! Thank you for reminding me about that. I think Princess Tutu also came on a Newtype USA dvd, so I got to see the first episode of that as well. I've heard many good things about it, but I've not picked it up for some reason. I think it may because my interest in anime has waned, for the most part. Will definitely have to check it out!
I've heard good things about Madoka as well, so that's something else I'll need to watch. Thank you so much for the recs.
I've never really had anyone to talk about anime with. I'm rather shy and suffer from social anxiety, so I don't really reach out and engage in conversations with other anime fans. So yeah, I'm extremely thankful to be talking to you.
I must admit that I've not seen all of the classics or staples of anime, so my list will be quite brief and limited to a lot of stuff I saw on Toonami. For a variety of reasons, I've not been able to watch a lot of anime series, but I've seen a few of the classics. Some of my favorite include Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop, Dirty Pair, Lupin the Third, Yoroiden Samurai Troopers, the Tenchi series, of course, Outlaw Star, G Gundam, Gundam Wing, Nadia, Ghost in the Shell in all of its variations, and others I'm too tired to name atm. It would be a long list. I'm ashamed to admit that I have seen the original Gundam or any of the other UC Gundam series.
What about you?
I'm a bit tired, but if you reply, I'll reply as soon as I wake up. That is, if you want to continue chatting later today. A bit hesitant about giving out my email or anything like that. I sadly don't have a DW or LJ account either. I've been to make one though.
Re: Fandoms that stay with you.
Any gems? The only ones I remember where the ones I listed before, sorry. I mean, Maze was really bizarre... I think the lead female turned into a horny man and tried to get his freak on? I Dream of Mimi was about a guy who had to have sex with a robot and then there were sexy Mac vs. Windows wars... I don't know how I got away with watching these when I was young, haha. A friend of mine loved Bubblegum Crisis tho. I never watched it however. It featured kickass females and mecha stuff from what I recall. I kinda feel like looking it up myself now!
Oh, my mistake. I looked at Wikipedia quickly to refresh my memory and saw the name Ryoko and automatically thought she was featured in it some way. Maybe I'll give it a chance then?
I miss Newtype as well! I still have my Noire and Chance Pop episode DVDs. It was a good magazine and I loved the free episodes they gave out.
I get you on the waning of love of anime. The last show I finished to completion was PMMM. I started Durarara!!! months ago, but I haven't finished it yet (and it was good too). I don't know what happened. I still love it, but other things hold my attention longer.
No problem! Hope you like them :)
I'm glad you reached out :) I'm having fun talking to you.
The ones I haven't seen mentioned by you are: G Gundam, Samurai Troopers, Outlaw Star (always on my to watch list, yet never watched). I've seen parts of Ghost in the Shell, Dirty Pair, and Lupin. I liked them all from what I saw. But I have not seen the original Gundam, even though I've heard good things about Char etc.
I was really big on Escaflowne in its hayday, Jubei-can, Magic User's Club, Haibane-Reime, DBZ, RahXephon, and Scrapped Princess.
Newish-old ones: Fullmetal Alchemist, Last Exile, Mushishi, Kurau, Seirei no Morbito, The Twelve Kingdoms, and probably others I can't think of.
I'll be heading to bed soon as well. My eyes are getting tired. I"m always open for more chatting! Messages get sent to my email account, so I'll just keep an eye on it. Message me however you feel comfortable. This is an anon site :) I do have anon messaging on my journal, so you can drop me a line there if you feel comfortable to do so as well.
Re: Fandoms that stay with you.
(Anonymous) 2013-03-21 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)Those sound fun to watch in a cheesy, bad anime sort of way. You know, kinda like terrible b-movies? But b-anime.. Heh. Bubblegum Crisis! Oh, I want to see that too. I've heard it's fantastic! I really love the character designs and that fact that it features awesome, badass women is always a plus. It was supposed to be longer, but it was cut short because the funding was cut or something. It was cut short, that much is for certain.
That's a different Ryoko, so no worries! I think she took the name after Ryoko or was named after her. Something like that. I've heard it's bad, but if you want to give a shot, then go ahead!
I've not watched Noir, but I've heard some music from the series. Canta Per Me is absolutely gorgeous! I've never heard of Chance Pop until now! Huh, will have to look it up later. And yeah, I absolute loved Newtype! It was a great way to get exposed to anime back then! Those free DVDs were awesome and they had so many previews!
I bet I will! :3 They sound absolutely fantastic!
And I'm have fun talking to you. It's good to summon up the nerve and reach out every so often.
G Gundam is fun and ridiculously cheesy/awesome, but it's a bit problematic in a few ways. Most of the Gundams are designed around national stereotypes, and the characters representing those countries and piloting those Gundams, can be bit stereotypical as well. However, they're fleshed out and for the most part they aren't just walking stereotypes. They have character. Just thought I'd give you heads up on that.
Yoroiden Samurai Troopers was released as Ronin Warriors in the US, and it was shown on Toonami. It's been a couple of years since I've seen it, I should probably try to watch it again. It would probably be better if you wiki it, lol. I'm not at that could at describing things. It's pretty good from what I can remember.
Outlaw Star is fun ride ride and most of the characters are absolutely awesome. And it features an hot springs episodes that is actually funny! It's got everything from catgirls, spaceships, spaceship races, android, and a lot more. It's basically Wish Fulfillment: The Series in that regard. The opening theme song Through The Night is badass! And the ending songs Tsuki no Ie and Hiru no Tsuki are some of the most beautiful themes songs for an anime that I've ever heard. Check those songs out and tell me what you think of them.
The original Dirty Pair series is an absolute classic and so are the Lupin series. Definitely a must to check out when you have time. Dirty Pair Flash is not as good as the original, but I enjoy it. It's a bit of guilty pleasure for me. It's not that bad, it's a bit below average than anything else.
Magic User's Club! I've never had a chance to watch it, but I remember watching a VHS or DVD of an anime that had a preview for it. I Wanna Do More was featured in it and it's such a catchy little song. Such an earworm! DBZ is the only thing from that list I've watched. I remember trying to get to home on time to watch it and Sailor Moon on Toonami. Those were the days.. Such nostalgia! I'll add those anime to my list of stuff to watch.. I'm a bit of a procrastinator, but I'll get around to it. Eventually, lol.
Last Exile was on Toonami, but I don't remember much of it to be honest. It's been too long. FMA! I love both of the series! It's a fantastic show and I have such a crush on Olivier. She's a BAMF! Every time she was onscreen, I would get such a thrill. Almost made me want to jump up and cheer for her every time she did something awesome.
Mushishi has a nice opening song, but that's my only exposure to it. Been meaning to check it out too! Escaflowne is another I wanted to check out, but I wasn't able to get my hands on a DVD set before Bandai USA closed down. RahXephon is another I've never had the chance to watch.
Glad to hear that you're open to more chatting! :) I've only been browsing Fandom Secrets for a couple of weeks or so, so I've got a lot to learn. I wasn't sure if I should post this reply on your journal here. Decided to go for here, since I wasn't sure which journal entry to post my reply on. Haha, I didn't want to post it on an unrelated journal entry.
Re: Fandoms that stay with you.
Haha. I think you're right! They were B-anime. That sucks that they cut the Bubblegum Crisis episode count down. Endings for shows always suffer because of that.
I love cheesy stuff haha. It's great. Thanks for the heads up! Glad everyone was fleshed out by the end. On another note, when Gundam Seed was on TV, I always wanted to watch it, but my schedule never matched up and I always missed it.
*Smacks forehead* Now I know what you are talking about! I remember catching a few episodes of Ronin Warriors on YTV back in the day. It was filled with lots of pretty boys in fancy armour fighting. I think I read one or two of the manga as well. I remember the yaoi fics/fanart were abundant with that series.
I used to have a small poster of Gene on my wall in high school from Otaku USA actually. I just thought he was attractive, haha. I like the songs :) The OPing song is so catchy! It makes me want to jump up and dance. The endings songs are very calming. I like the Tsuki no Ie a lot. It sounds like song you'd listen to before you went to sleep.
They totally are. I am so far behind on the Lupin and Diry Pair series. I recall seeing different episodes/movies from them at anime cons and loving them a lot tho. I really need to catch up. I need more hours in the day for all the anime that I need to watch now, haha
Magic User's Club makes me crack up when ever I watch it. The OVA series is the best as it's hilarious, but the TV series isn't bad either. It is a great song :D I am amazed that you remember! I also like this OP for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbViuoDydoM
I still haven't seen brotherhood yet ;>; I've been meaning to watch it, but like most things in my life, I had to put watching it on hold. Olivier is a total BAMF tho! I love her father and his sparkling muscles as well.
Bandai going down was such a shame. It makes me sad that so many anime/manga publishing houses here have closed down. I have a few incomplete manga series that will never be finished because Tokyo Pop and CMX went down.
It doesn't matter to me where you post on my entries. They're not sacred to me. I was thinking of making a post on my journal that said "Tenchi-Mouse post here" but I wasn't sure if I should or not, haha.
What else are you interested in?
Re: Fandoms that stay with you.
(Anonymous) 2013-03-22 02:01 am (UTC)(link)B-anime is the perfect term! I love watching b-movies, so it only makes sense that I'd love watching subpar anime. Really makes me want to marathon some, but not sure if I've got any atm. It really is a shame. It was supposed to be 13 episodes, if Wikipedia is anything to go by. It also has some awesome music! Check out Mysterious Night, if you can. It's so good and it's really got an awesome feel to it. Especially if you check out a translation of the lyrics. They took down the video I was going to link you to for it on youtube. :(
So am I! It's one of my favorite series! And I'm glad I'm not alone in not having watched the original Gundam series! I think I only caught a few episodes of Gundam Seed. I don't remember much about it. I know that feeling though. Whenever I missed an episode of a show on Toonami, I was so heartbroken. Haha, I really hated missing out on it. Sill hate missing episodes of teh shows I watch.
Yep! Such pretty, pretty boys. http://i.imgur.com/rboRiQG.jpg It was such a great series! Was there really a lot of fic for it? There's not too much on FFNet. Then again, there's around 2,000 or so, but still. Maybe my standards of a lot of bizarre! Probably a lot of fic went down with the sites dedicated to it and those on Geocities! A damn shame...
I've really missed out on a lot of fandoms, especially older ones.I was incredibly late getting into fandom and some of my Toonami show related fandoms are so small now. ;-; Really missed out, especially on fic. When I think about how many fic I've missed out on that's been deleted or lost because sites went down, I get a little sad.
You are not alone in finding Gene Starwind attractive. He was fucking sexy and I love his scars! Men with scars are really sexy to me. Me too! Through the Night really gets me pumped up! I love both of the endings a lot, but Hiru no Tsuki is my favorite of the two. I remembering singing along with the endings whenever they came on television. So embarrassing. They really are calming and I do go to sleep to them sometimes. Other times, I listen to them when I'm upset. They're like lullabies.
There's a lot of Lupin stuff to watch! There's the television series, movies, the television specials, and OVAS! I've not even watched everything myself! There's a ton of episodes and it's really intimidating. There's 36 episodes of the original Dirty Pair series, including the OVAS, so it's not as long. Flash is just 16 episodes. So much anime, so little time!
Haha, of course I remembered it! It's on my playlist, lol. So catchy. I love the woman's voice.. Also have to opening for the television series on my playlish. So good. So soothing in a way. Guess I'll have to check it out ASAP!
You haven't? Aw, that's a shame! It's an excellent series and most of the openings and endings are fantastic. My favorite is Golden Time Lover! Gets me pumped up so much. Period's great too. Rain too! I'll stope, otherwise I'll be ending up naming all of the songs, lol. Olivier and her brother Armstrong, are such total BAMFs. They team up later on and it's a sight to behold!
Bandai going down was absolutely terrible. So many series I wasn't able to buy and a lot of them were ones that may not get rescued by other companies. It really is sad! I didn't find out that Emma was being published in English until long after CMX Manga went down. Which is a damn shame because I wanted to buy it and support the manga industry. Isn't Tokyopop going to publish manga again? I've heard that they were back in business.
Oh, alright then. I was worried about it, for some reason.. I worry about little things like that a lot. Go ahead! If you make that journal entry, I'll post over there! Would love to continue chatting with you.
Tbh, I'm very boring. I've suffered from depression for years and haven't been able to get help for it. It's really killed a lot of my interest in things I've used to love so much. I've not read a book in years and have no idea where to even begin. There's the classics and a lot of them, but for newer books, I'm absolutely stuck.
I enjoy watching television, but I don't follow many shows. Mainlyy watccrime shows like Criminal Minds, SVU, and the shows in Discovery ID. I'm watching OUAT even though I've not managed to watch the first season, plus I'm catching up the episodes of Doctor Who that I missed from reruns on BBC America. I also follow True Blood and Mad Men, but that's about it were ongoing shows. I catch reruns of the first few seasons of Supernatural on TNT.
I watch reruns of Angel on TNT and Buffy on Chiller. I've not watched passed season three of either of them though. Mostly because all of my favorite characters on Buffy moved to Angel after season three. And I've heard about what happens to Cordelia, my favorite character, on Angel and it really sort of killed my interest in watching past that. I'm going to try to finish them up though.
I enjoy listening to music, but as for my tastes in it, it's varied. I'll listen to whatever I think sounds good. So vague, huh? Like I said, I'm boring.
I also read a lot of fanfiction and spend time browsing for fanart.
What about you? What are some of your fandoms and ships?
Re: Fandoms that stay with you.
(Anonymous) 2013-03-22 02:02 am (UTC)(link)Oh, and I also read a lot of manga. Heh.
Re: Fandoms that stay with you.
