Re: Is the risk of serious/permanent injury worth doing something you love?
Personally, I have a hard time seeing it as worth it. But I can also imagine that it's a harder decision if dancing (or another potentially hazardous activity) is really your passion.
I decided to quit martial arts because I decided the potential for injury, and the possibility of catching some sort of infection like MRSA, just wasn't worth it to me. I decided to quit after I botched a landing and almost hurt my neck. On the one hand, I think quitting was easier for me because martial arts was never a big passion. On the other hand, I think for me, it's hard to feel passionate about something if I'm worried about getting hurt. Even though the MRSA thing probably wasn't as big of a threat as I was imagining, it was something I really worried about, to the point where it was affecting my enjoyment.
I do think it's worth considering how you'd feel years from now. Is it worth living with chronic pain in exchange for being able to dance for a comparatively shorter amount of time?
I also think that if you can recover from an injury by taking some time off, it's stupid not to. It's better to spend a few months not dancing, and have to get back into the swing of things, than to push yourself too hard and risk a more serious injury.
And while being a competitive dancer or athlete is definitely a worthy pursuit in its own right, I think people should be aware of alternatives, too. Dancing or playing a sport more casually is an option. It's not an option that will appeal to everyone, but it's there, and it's another possibility if competitive dancing starts to take too much of a toll.
