Re: Is the risk of serious/permanent injury worth doing something you love?

I can sorta get it. I have chronic tendinitis in my arms and wrist (it's not carpal tunnel, it's the tendon at the outside of the arm up to the little finger)... and when it was flaring, I still participated in a writing marathon that week. >_>

So, I don't know if this is true for dance, but for my situation, I was able to find stuff to help heal the tendons. Your friend sounds like she's dealing with much higher level stuff, though. I would say that she probably needs to take a break from dancing, and follow doctor's recommendations for PT and whatever other treatments they suggest, at least for long enough to heal. Because, really, there's a point at which you can't push it any longer and your body just finally says "Sorry, fuck you, nope."

So, I'd say, not give up, but be reasonable about it. Prioritize your health. Because isn't it better to have a long-term career rather than a short one, and life-long pain from the damage that you've done to yourself? (I do say this without much knowledge of Irish dance; I don't know if this is a career like, say, gymnastics, where you're expected to "age out" in your early 20s.)
