I hate it because I don't feel like I can converse with people. You can't have conversations and I don't think you can make friends on there. Sure, people "manage" it but it's a burden and just unfun.

I feel the same anon. People have tried to argue with me that it's not that hard to converse on tumblr (plugins or whathaveyou) but I find the whole thing an annoying and disorganized mess and there's just very little room for real discussion.

It's great for fanart and gifs and fun things, but fandom shouldn't have moved EVERYTHING there.

This is a big reason I haven't gotten a Tumblr and just lurk on specific pages. What's the point if you can't actually talk/write to people?

No, YOU can't. I've made more friends on tumblr than I ever did in the cliquey ridiculousness that LJ fandom was. Fanmail, asks, threading... it's all there. Just because it's not OMG EXACTLY LIKE LJ doesn't make it impossible. Hell, you get instant alerts to replies and reblogs now for god sake and they're all laid out happily with clicky little links in your log (tumblr.com/blog/-insert your url here- or just click the Posts button).

Yes, it's different. Yes, you'll have to adapt, but just because you don't want to does not mean it's impossible.
