I've never understood the deal with Hetalia. Just. Why is it so popular? It's cute and well done, yeah, sure, but why the blazes is it one of the largest fandoms to exist?

If you ask me, there's nothing bad about liking it simply because there's nothing special about liking it. There's nothing special about the whole thing at all.

*shrugs* Perhaps I don't get something important.

Also: countries are supposed to represent people, not governments. German people weren't all of a sudden turned evil during the WWII. There were good ones, there were bad ones, and the culture was still centuries old; a major part of it had nothing to do with Hitler.

Large cast, plus people like talking about their counties and being defensive about it

It's got a huge cast, and the characters that don't show up as often means that the fandom has a lot of room to play with their characterization making it ripe for fanworks. It also simplifies it's characters into tropes and stereotypes (yan/kuu/tsundere, moe, sister complex, etc. and LOUD AMERICAN), so people love that.

Also, fans like picking out "their nation" and making them cool because they know how badass their own country is. It's kind of like Homestuck with the troll cast, especially the bit about "patron trolls" that match up with someone's zodiac sign.

blah blah blah my point is that low character development + large cast = conducive for fandom.

It had a magnificent Japanese fandom producing thousands of work. Also a lot of different characters people could choose and read a little about.
