It didn't happen to me, but one of my friends (who I'm not very close to) complained when her grandma gave her a good deal of money because when she called to say thank you her grandma mentioned that my friend was only calling because she got money, not because she wanted to talk to her grandma. Which is true. But my friend complained about how mean her grandma was.

Situations like that bug me. It was a gesture to say thank you. That's...what it is. If she wanted her granddaughter to chat, then call to chat. Don't give her money and expect her not to call explicitly to say thank you. Ugh.

I can kind of see both ways; I mean, on the one hand I agree with you a lot, but on the other hand, knowing my friend, she could have embellished on how "mean" her grandma.
