Hold your breath and swallow three times whilst holding it.

Was going to say something similar. Swallow as many times as you can in a row. It doesn't always work if it's a strong set of hiccups, but it's the most effect thing I've found. And might at least decrease the severity.

Okay. I take no responsibility if you choke to death and I'm not sure I can explain this right but I take a sip of water, holding it in my mouth until I feel on the verge of hiccuping and then I swallow against the hiccup as it rises. Sometimes it takes two or three tries but it's never not worked for me. You don't necessarily need the water, swallowing against a hiccup a few times works for me, but in my experience the water helps.

The other day I had the hiccups really bad and my normal methods of drinking water and holding my breath weren't helping so I tried singing. It worked.

SUCCESS!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-22 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't pretty, but it worked! Thank you!

Just breathe slowly. It may help to lay flat on your stomach.

Deep, slow, even breaths. And then watch or do something to get your mind off of the hiccups. They'll go away on their own if you relax.

this and what nursejoy said

hiccups are your body trying to forcefully draw in air for whatever reason, so let it know you are totally getting enough air, calm down already, sheesh, by breathing regularly and markedly

Drink from the wrong side of the glass. As in, get a glass of water and lean over and drink from the side of it that is furthest from you.

Sounds ridiculous, but I swear it always works for me.

Seconding this. I swear to you, we're not just trying to get you to spill water on yourself. I legitimately have never had this fail.

Also- small, short cups are considerably easier to use for this, especially if you've never tried it before.

Yes! This nearly always works for me.

For times when I can't drink water*, pressing a fist against my solar plexus has helped.

* For instance, I got hiccups during a concert once - as in I was on stage with my choir. Great timing, I know.

What usually works for me is to hold my breath and swallow it (taking a drink of water at the same time helps).

I actually strangle myself to get rid of hiccups sometimes, so this is a valid, if possibly dangerous, suggestion.

Occasionally forcing myself to burp works.

Amazingly enough, someone related this on my reading list the other day, and as far as I've tested it on myself and other people, it actually works - but you need another person.

Basically, you hold your breath. The other person tells you, somewhere between 3-5 seconds later, when to inhale again. Do this as many times as you can stand. Thing is, the not knowing when seems to be the key.

I just say "fish" really fast until they go away. Something about the whistling sound made when you say the "sh" really fast makes it really hard to hiccup.

Get a drink and take a sip every ten seconds. It's the only thing that works for me.

Hiccups are your diaphram in spasm. Holding my breath usually works for me. But drinking water or singing or a number of other things can work since those activities can move it out of spasm.
