because they're blind so they rely on the one sense they know their way around

True, they're probably still mostly blind. Their eyes have started to noticeably sift from all blue to having some definition in the pupil, but I think they can see light/dark but not much else. But still, why licking?

They have a great sense of smell from birth to find their mother don't they? That seems a less dangerous way to explore than licking unknown substances.
