Because people assume willful death is the result of somebody trying to escape their problems rather than "deal" with them and "fix" them.

They don't seem to accept that some problems can't be fixed or dealt with. Some problems - mental and physical - are life-long. Some problems are so difficult to deal with on a day-to-day basis, that even if there's an end to it, it's not worth it to them. These things happen, and for a lot of people, suicide is the last resort and something they've grappled with for a long time. And it's hard to understand being in that position if you've never been in it yourself - hell, even some people who have been in that position can look down their noses just because they think that if they've pulled through their pain and suffering, that everyone should be able to.
