Well, I can't speak for all of them, but it's possible that some simply couldn't afford it? I rarely give anyone gifts on christmas because I'm just that poor [I can afford what I *need* - and am eternally grateful the place I have has free wifi...But beyond that? I have to say for weeks just to have a spare 20 bucks] so it does happen for some people.

All my friends at the time (with one exception) had more spending money than me and were always going out and buying things I couldn't afford, so I doubt that was the case for them. If it was, I wouldn't have minded (and in the case of my one friend who didn't have much money, I didn't).
