I joined ONTD last May, and it was fun at first, what with all the Avengers and Dark Knight Rises posts, but then I sat in on my Avengers second party post and realized how horribly mean and petty the most frequent commenters were. It hit me that these people had fashioned themselves into cool kids from high school that they'd always wanted to be, tearing everyone down to make themselves feel better because from what I can tell, those people have no lives to speak of. At all. An occasional (usually fandom-related) post here or there can be fun, though.

I don't have a Tumblr, but I've lurked on a few pages, and the ones I've been drawn to seem to be filled with people trying to have fun in their own, silly, fandom-y way. Tumblr is too time-consuming for me to have one, but if that's what makes you happy, then go for it, OP. Let go and have fun.

I feel like this happens online in a lot more places then ONTD though- people are miserable, sometimes being miserable makes you lose yourself in an online forum of some kind, in that forum it becomes very easy to be rude to other people.

I've seen this in chat rooms, message boards, journals, social networks and throughout all fandom, it's just kind of a problem with how people treat the internet.

Tumblr is actually the opposite of time-consuming. I spend a few minutes tops each day if I want to looking at it, or I spend an hour if that's what I chose to do. It's pretty straightforward. But it is fun and generally the wank is pretty easy to ignore.
