Anime/manga/games still have huge fandoms, I think fandom in general is just a lot bigger these days so not ALL of the attention is on anime.

I think this also happened because back in the day, the only way to get your hands on anime (if you were in the western world) and to know what was going on was to be online. Now it's a lot easier to be a casual anime fan and not partake in fandom.

I got a little tired of anime fandom myself, I still like anime but I can't really hold a conversation with new fans because I mainly just like my old series, so I started avoiding telling people I like anime at all.

This, basically.

Same here. I'm more a fan of older stuff and so most of my aniem fandoms are small. For the most part, newer anime doesn't do it for me. Sure there's a few gems every year, but there's not many new series that appeal to me. I mostly focus on reading manga these days.

My issue was that I don't have the time I used to for weeding through all the bad anime to get to the few good series (and it's hard to trust other anime fans for what the good series are.) I started seeing too many animes that were all the same or animes that started out well but went on for way too long, so eventually I just gave up trying.

My issue was more of a lack of motivation to even check out anything from upcoming seasons and because of the lack of variety. There's too many anime with cookie-cutter plots, characters, etc that it really killed my interest in newer stuff and anime for a time. That's why I turned my focus manga. There's much more variety.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, pretty much. After watching enough of the stuff in years past to be properly familiarized with the plots and tropes, the newer series don't have much new to offer and weeding through things takes time I don't have anymore. I suspect that's what happens to most fans as they age out of high school and college.

"Same here. I'm more a fan of older stuff and so most of my aniem fandoms are small."

This is me, basically. I really like a few series, but my favorite ones have either tiny fandoms or non-existent ones (yay Emma: A Victorian Romance and The Rose of Versailles <3)l. I just can't really keep up with current stuff, so I mostly like my old faves.

I'm a bit more fortunate in that most of my fandoms, while they've waned greatly and are small, still a produce a decent amount fic and fanart.

Rose of Versailles is a classic that I've sadly not seen, but it's been licensed and I plan on buying it as soon as it's out. I feel you on the Emma fandom though. It's a good manga, with great, fleshed out characters, and I'm sad that the fandom's so small.

Kaoru Mori's absolutely awesome and her art is mind-blowingly gorgeous. That dedication to detail! And I absolutely love how her woman have more realistic proportions and are fleshy, for a lack of a better word. And they come in a variety of body types and more importantly, personalities.

Rose of Versailles is really great; it's super great to hear that it's been licensed! It seems a bit cheesy at first (there are moments where it's kind of stereotypical shoujo) but I love how badass Oscar is. I plan on buying it when it's out, too.

Emma is my all-time favorite manga/anime and I love it for all your reasons. I wish there was more of a fandom, or that it was still sold (I've been hunting for reasonably priced copies of a couple volumes I've been missing for a couple of years now). But yeah, the characters, the detail and the art made me a fan. <3

I've heard that it can be a bit cheesy and melodramatic, but I'm okay with that. I've got a certain fondness for it. I've heard about how awesome Oscar is so I'm very excited that I'll be able to watch it! Yep, it was licensed by Nozomi entertainment. The first collection comes out on May 7 and the second on July 9. Definitely a must buy for me.

Emma's one of my all-time favorite manga too and Otoyomegatari, despite some of the issues I have with it, is becoming another. It's a shame that it's a bimonthly series. I usually end up forgetting about it for a few months before catching up.

Rose of Versailles is awesome! Its age shows in the things that look gimmicky or cheesy to modern eyes, but it's a great story.

Same and agreeing with other anon as well.

I still keep up with a handful of new shows each year but mostly I'll only talk about it with people already in my friends circle on twitter/tumblr. Fandom at large just doesn't interest me anymore.

Thiiis. I miss my old faves.
