As far as I'm concerned it was (fucked up) self defense and though it's in character for her to regret it, I don't think she should. The whole 'Oh, let's not kill people when they've repeatedly tried to kill us and we've given them chances to change but they refuse to take them' thing is just dumb. Frankly I'm tired of Regina PERIOD, because I know if I go anywhere near the fandom people will be excusing whatever horrible thing she's done this week. And the show tries to paint her with a sympathetic brush but all their attempts are pretty pathetic imo.

Yeah. I wanted to like Regina, and I wanted to feel sympathy for her, because they've presented this portrait of a woman who was basically good, and has been twisted and manipulated by outside forces. But it's gotten to the point where she really has no more excuses. She's been presented with a chance to change, and she's been shown to know and understand that the things she does are wrong, but she chooses to do them anyway. As for hating Snow for killing her mother, it's not like she even liked her mother. She's mourning the mother she wishes she could have had, rather than being grateful for the death of the evil mother she actually had.

I'm just tired of wanting to like her, but being unable to justify anything she does.

I didn't even get that far; kudos to you! I could have liked her if the show had made it clear she regrets her actions and if she had changed her ways, but at this point I don't think I could ever buy a redemption arc from her. And while I know it's possible (even normal) to like evil characters...Regina's brand of evil doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.

and she's been shown to know and understand that the things she does are wrong, but she chooses to do them anyway

That bothers me, yea. If she didn't understand maybe her actions wouldn't seem as harsh (they'd still be horrible of course), but nope, she gets it, she just doesn't care.

She's mourning the mother she wishes she could have had

That's exactly what it is imo.

Regina lost me when she killed her father. I can't understand her after that, and I need understanding to sympathize. Killing people who you hate, because 'mwah-hah-hah don't give a fuck'? That's evil, but at least it makes sense.

Killing the person you love most, the only person left who you truly love and who loves you - your own father? That's fucked-up on a level I can't get my head around

Yeah, this. I LOVE villains, and it's pretty easy to get me to sympathize with them (while also knowing they are evil), but I need them to not be actively self defeating in stupid ways. Rumple manipulating people for years and masterminding the whole curse to get back to his son? Love it. Selfish, "I'm going to get what I want and screw the rest" villains are my crack, especially if what they want is something that, at its core, is understandable (like trying to get his son back).

But Regina killing the one person she still loved to get revenge on someone who (accidentally as a child) led to the death of that other person she loved makes NO sense to me. Neither does her choice to side with Cora, who ACTUALLY killed Daniel. What the fuck is her motivation at this point? If she just wants to be loved, why did she kill her father? If she just wants revenge, why does she not stab Cora in the face?

To me, they've painted her as so weak and manipulated and confused that at this point that I can't really see her as an entertaining "love to hate" type villain. And the same time, she's made so many repeated self-defeating choices that can't care that she's sad, either, because it really is her own damn fault at this point, regardless of the roles Cora and Rumple played in her downfall.

(Apparently I have a lot of feeling about this. In general I think I'd find her a way more reasonable character if I felt her early grudge against Snow were in any way justified. I wish they writers had had the balls to make the inciting indecent in their feud something that Snow, as an adult, had actively done with the knowledge that it would hurt Regina.)

Not to mention, Snow did what she did because Cora fed her a line of bullshit and she bought it.

In the very next scene with Daniel, Regina proceeded to buy the 'Sure, marry him, I want you to be happy!' bullshit hook, line, and sinker. And she's been similarly gullible in recent episodes. But it's so hard for her to believe that a child got bamboozled in that manner?

(I sometimes entertain the headcanon that Regina's hatred of Snow is some kind of misdirected self-hatred for just this reason, and she's not quite intelligent enough to realize it...but I'm not sure the show is intelligent enough to have done it that way on purpose.)
