But you are wrong, though, about no fanfic writers ever getting paid. Like for smaller names, pennypaperbrain from Sherlock fandom (which is itself a fanfiction, albeit a very well funded one), is paid to write books and articles for a company and freelancing. That's her job. I have a very nice friend called r scribbles who started out writing fanfic and doing twitter rp, both comedy based, and right now she works writing comedy for BBC radio. And then you have the slightly bigger names, Cassie Claire and EL James and Jaida Jones and the Starkids. And then big name fanfic writers (although it's not dressed up like fanfiction, it totally IS fanfiction) like Moffat and McGuire and Walt Disney.
Maybe it's not treated as respectable, but fanfiction is a big deal and it has merit and it kind of runs our culture when people DO get paid to do it (although in my book more people should). It deserves just as much respect as fanart.
If you consider classic disney movies to be embarrassing then I have nothing left to say to you :P
