Cassandra Claire is one of those people who's more of a ficcer made good than a pro-writer who also writes fic, IMHO. And published work aside, she still leaves a bad taste in my mouth from all the crap antics way back when.

Well, yeah, me too, I wouldn't touch her with a barge pole, myself. But I see her books on the shelf, so there she is. Rob Thurman and Naomi Novik might also be "fanficcers who made good," but the fact is that fanfiction writing can and does turn into professional writing, and it's not particularly rare.
