Re: Appropriation
(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)"shitty historical associations with people who are a bunch of dumbheads while also doing some stuff that was okay"
it plays into a lot of narratives that i don't care for
also i don't think that's really a "code" so much as "what the word means"
Re: Appropriation
(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)That's a much more descriptive explanation of your objection to the term. Okay, I can work with that. What term would you suggest as a replacement?
Re: Appropriation
(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 12:59 am (UTC)(link)Well...no?
"Problematic" goes beyond "I don't like this." I don't like the color yellow, for example. That doesn't make the color yellow problematic.
Something that's problematic is something that has greater social or cultural effects.
Re: Appropriation
I've come to hate the word problematic, too, but only because of the people I keep read use it. The word itself is still valid. Hell, I wish I could reclaim it.
