A lot of people like to do fanfics with the characters going into how the premise of the comics would work in those events.

Sometimes they are very well done, and respectful of the issues and events that took place. Sometimes they aren't, and show a definite bias. There are some pairings that actually have a reputation for being the later [most notably Rus/Ame concerning...pretty much everything related the Cold War, iirc].

Thing is, at least in the parts of fandom I've been in, people who do the latter tend to get called out for it, and it's strongly frowned on to do it .
