and so is snapshot fanfics at the just-for-fun level. Neither medium is somehow more work or better than the other, they both have levels of complexity, time, dedication, fun versus seriousness.

Art is not that much easier to view and get attention for. Both depend on your skill levels, the fandom, the subject matter. A quick for fun fic can get more or less attention than a quick for fun art depending on those...and sheer dumb luck on who sees and shares it.

To be totally pedantic--art generally is "easier to view." That's why at conventions, if you're looking for work and you're an artist, you can get a portfolio review from just about anyone behind a table at Artist Alley, but if you're a writer, you've got to...I don't know, schmooze, I guess? That's what I see most writers doing--talking and making connections and possibly getting to a pitch. But you can look at a page for all of five seconds and tell the skill level of the artist, while reading script, prose, fic, what-have-you, takes a bit longer--even judging the quality is a lot harder to do on knee-jerk reaction.

But yeah, in general fandom, it's true. Firstly, that quick, derpy art makes the rounds pretty well (usually better than any of the stuff I actually put effort into...), and that ease-of-consumption depends on what the viewer/reader is in the mood for--epic artwork or chaptered fic, or a quick fluffy snapshot.
