dunno about others but
(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 02:28 am (UTC)(link)A fancomic is "longer", both in actual real life size and in terms of the events it covers, but you're (both as an audience and as the artist and/or writer) still limited to the things you can see/show in the panels, and only those. And due to the medium, it only has snapshots of key moments, because everything in-between is unnecessary.
With words, though, the writer can pain not just the key moments, but everything in-between, and not make it redundant!
This is a very subjective thing, but I much prefer, as an audience, walking besides, or even inside the mind, of the characters, and have adventures feel whole and complete, and not feel like I didn't get to see everything that there was to be seen.
I think you've had the misfortune of having shitty fanfic writers in your fandoms, OP. The good ones? They don't run things into the ground, like you described in your secret.
And, yeah, to regular non-fandom people, it's best to show them the (work safe, non-shippy) fanart and keep the fanfiction to yourself, but why do you care so much of people in your non-fandom social groups approving of your fandom pursuits? It's usually best to keep those separate, I've found.

I knew I should have read this one more time before submitting. Ah, well.
