Re: Appropriation

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
The problem for me is that the internet/tumblr definition of appropriation seems to be 'yell at white people for wearing (eating, listening to, and watching) anything from another culture, and keep all cultures separate, and pure'. It severely dilutes any real cases of appropriation, and just makes the message into so much static.

Cultural Appropriation should not mean Cultural Segregation.

I agree, but I think this is a problem with Tumblr-style activism in general. There are a lot of valid concepts that have been stretched extremely thin.

Outside of that bubble, I find that a lot of people can differentiate between someone genuinely appreciating another culture, and someone appropriating or exoticizing it. And the thing is, sometimes people mean to show appreciation, but don't realize that they're doing it in ways that come across as ignorant. For example, wearing a sacred or meaningful symbol from another culture without understanding its meaning or how it's supposed to be worn. Like with a lot of issues, it's not always clear-cut.

In any case, the fact that some people dilute the meaning of appropriation doesn't mean that appropriation doesn't happen at all.

That's true, and most reasonable people do respect other cultures and customs. However I get a bit uncomfortable with this notion that the entire concept of 'appropriation' is confined completely to white people (who are then told that they have no culture of their own), and what white people do.

The ideal seems to be, that if I were to try and share my culture with a white person, they would be obligated to hand my gift back to me and inform me that I was 'oppressing myself' by attempting to share.

No it's never clear cut, but I hate this feeling that it's going to leak off of Tumblr one day.
