Which "people"? Are talking about noted trends, anecdata, people you personally know-?

I have never, ever seen someone who was formerly racist and truly wanted to change, for example, go up to someone else and demand praise for not hating on other races.

I have seen people trying to change who- before they got to that point, other people telling them "good on you" for picking up when they were inadvertently being racist/sexist/homophoic and trying to stop, sounded like it helped a lot.

I'm talking about people on the internet, more or less. I don't know anyone who's recovered from being a horrible homophobe or a racist because once I start hearing that gross stuff I tend to walk away. However I live in a part of the country where a lot people keep racism and homophobia under wraps because they don't WANT to be racist or homophobic, so that's a lot easier for me to do.

I've never seen someone in person walk up and demand praise for not being racist, but I've seen plenty of people do that online.

However this is playing into the differences between how people act in person and how they act on blogs and message boards.

You're talking about a particular subset of "people," then, the ones that change because they want attention and are fishing for compliments or approval. I'm talking about the larger set of "people who are changing" and many of them like the OP of the secret do it for other reasons, like not wanting to hurt people.

There are plenty of both types on the internet, but it's not fair to say only the former exist, or that all "people" are like the former.
