It's simple.

Because Y chromosome.

The people who are upset it's about a dude, OK I may not agree but I kinda get it.

The ones who are upset about the whole Oz/Wicked Witch backstory snafu, I agree with.

The ones who are all "BUT HE WAS A DOUCHE AND THEY MADE HIM A HERO AND BAAAAW!" Yea, they can suck it.

How are these not symptoms of the same problem? People are upset 1) because a deliberately female-centric story was re-envisioned to be all about a guy and 2) because in the new version, the guy is portrayed with heroic qualities while the heroic qualities of the female characters are diminished. Both are about lessening the presence and power of female characters in the narrative.

The Wizard being the hero of this story doesn't change the fact that Dorothy is the hero of hers. The fact that they screwed with the other characters in the story, yes, that's fucked up and I don't agree with that. But I think people would bitch even if the writers had managed to do it without all the shady 'let's screw up the female characters' stuff. They'd be upset just because he's a dude. And while the original narrative was woman-centric, making this film, that's decades removed from the original canon, about a dude doesn't take anything away from that. Those stories are still what they always were. Anyone who has taken the time to read and fall in love with those stories shouldn't let one shitty movie threaten what they love. IMO, it shows a real lack of faith in how well those stories can show the power of women if one shit movie can even make a chip in them.

This is the same reason I never understood the backlash about Burton's Alice movie. Seeing that movie didn't diminish the books for me at all. Even though they're supposedly on the same time line, the Alice in the books will always be THE Alice. And the Wizard and the Witches in the Oz stories will always be THE Wizard and Witches.

From what I've heard, this is just a shitty prequel. One shitty story in what I've heard is an awesome series of stories. Written by someone other than the original author of the books, which strips more than half its cred right there. No one will remember this movie in a few years. It will be just like pretty much every other Disney prequel/sequel (or pretty much any shitty prequel/sequel); anyone who's an actual fan of the original will ensure that their kids know the original and disregard the shit. It's practically 75% of the way to becoming a bad 'this never happened' The Last Airbender-esque joke anyway. Much like what I did with The Last Airbender, I think people who hate this film should just pretend it never happened and save themselves a lot of stress. Toss it in the bin and enjoy the amazingness that is the original.
