late to the game

[personal profile] partialsatyr 2013-03-24 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
ever get super into a game or movie or show years after everyone else has? happens to me all the time.

case in point: about a year ago, i bought bioshock 1 and 2 when there was a steam sale. something like 15 dollars for the lot of them. could not get either one to work, no matter how many fixes i tried. i got royally pissed off and forgot about them both for over a year.

one new laptop later, i decide to take another swing at it, since all my friends are buzzing with nerd excitement about infinite. to my shock, the first one runs as soon as i run it in vista compatability mode. long story short, i beat it in under a day. that was yesterday, for the record.

kind of wish i could actually get a game and beat it while it was still new and relevant, as opposed to 5+ years after the fact. please tell me i'm not alone in this one.

I played Half-Life 2 for the first time last year. It's now my favorite game. I'm trying to avoid being like "guys, have you heard about this game Half-Life 2, it's so good!"

Have you played the Episodes? They're like a "best moments of Half-Life 2" collection. I love 'em.

I've played and loved both. :)

Excellent. Is this the Steam version or a console version?

Steam; bought the Half-Life complete pack during a steam sale.

to be fair, HL2 and its subsequent episodes are fucking amazing, so this is definitely a case of "better late than never"

now you get to join the rest of us in the painful wait for ep 3

:)

Oh, for sure; when I first played through HL2 I was like "...I get it now!"

And yes, the wait is painful and long. </3

Never would've gotten into Thief if Thief 3 hadn't come out.

That makes me a bad fan over at the main fandom forum but whatever.

god almighty i hate that mindset so much. if you dont play a series from the first game (at release, no less), then you are somehow a lesser fan

i'm sure you dont need to be told how weird some parts of the fallout fandom are about that

noooope

Thief fandom is worse though.

"You are contributing *nothing* to our movement. All you did was antagonise my statement with "its not integral to the gameplay its just a picture on your screen". That was stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid. Hence the mugwump, just like when SE was so busy insulting folks he forgot that Thief was about hiding in the shadows. What are you contributing, dethtoll. Why do 99.999999999999999% of all posts made by you antagonise your "enemies". You know nothing of me, LGS, or the classic games that you obviously have never played or even researched like some have done here. When you address me in the Thief forums like you are doing right now, I have a mixture of things going through my head. First and foremost, I wonder why this odd internet personality is swinging his brand of attention sucking my way, and what can I do to vanquish it and then hastily escape. Secondly, I struggle to keep a straight face as it becomes ever apparent that you are working with the social toolset of a high schooler. I think you need to spend more time with your friends in real life, and less time proving what you are made of on the internet. Yes, I know what to say to push your buttons, and yes, we laugh at your predictable responses. Im just soooooo sorry. Finally, in my years here I have never wasted a single post trying to reach another internet personality on a level intended to change that personas point of view, especially using insults. My posts, up until this one, have been carefully crafted troves of hints and clues, and each and every time lately you make some silly response meant to "level yourself up" in the forum. Jason was right when he said that most of us shadowy hardcores have no problem simply fading into the background in light of these modern game design choices. Unlike most, I like puzzling the uneducated gamers, such as yourself, and as I have said peviously, Im soooooo sorry. You are free to go now."

"my posts have been carefully crafted troves of hints and clues"
how can anyone write this out without an ounce of self-realization

i'm compelled to now ask what you did to set this guy off so badly

Because I told him the lightgem which told you how visible you were was just an iconic part of the user interface. I'd also asked him to stop telling me to smoke another poster who agreed with me's "mugwump jism."

Yep, I've just started playing Final Fantasy XIII. And I feel your pain with Bioshock. I bought the first game ages ago, but have never managed to get it working on my PC.

Re: late to the game

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-03-24 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Assassin's Creed 3 was the first AssCreed I played at release, so yes. I'm mostly a lurker in fandom anyway and none of my friends play the series so I have no one to talk with about it regardless, but I do wish I could've been around at the beginning of the series; I missed a lot.

Plus, I still have games that I should've beaten years ago, so it'll probably happen again.

I just watched Legally Blonde, and the musical.

I'm... A bit late for a lot of the fandom. And the fanfics.

Re: late to the game

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This happens to me all the time. I'm too cheap to buy most games new, and also too cheap to buy most current-gen systems. (I currently own no current-gen systems at all.) And my computer is also out-of-date and can't play most newer games either. So I am eternally years late playing games and wishing I could have played them back when they actually had active fandoms.

Hi,

My name is anon and I only started watching Buffy last month. When I'm done with this I'm going to get even more behind the scenes and watch Xfiles.

Same exact boat, really- I don't have the money or resources to play new games, so I'm almost always 3-5 years out of the loop! I'm still waiting to play Skyrim, for example; laptop can't handle it. SOON.

bioshock 1 and 2 are still some of my favourites. i'm looking forward to infinite, but it's definitely going to be different.

ALL THE TIME. I was four seasons late to Dexter, four to Supernatural, four to Breaking Bad, one to Boardwalk Empire (♥♥♥♥ my bb), two and a half to The Office, one to Homeland, two to Downton...shit, I didn't watch Firefly 'til 2011. I am just late to all of the parties ever.

Games I was currently playing in 2012 but probably need to just start over on since it's been so long since I last made anyone headway:

1. Assassin's Creed (released in 2007, and 4 main games have come out since with another on the way)

2. Fable 3 (released in 2011, so I was only a year late to it. I think a Kinect game has come out is coming out since then)

3. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (released in 2006. Skyrim came out in 2011)

So, yeah. I'm one of those people who is always late to the party. Let's just embrace the fact I showed up at all. (/SamSeaborn)
