I think OP means that with fanfic, you can enjoy it even if it's terrible because of how much you love the fandom. With original fic, not only do you have to pay for it it is entirely on the writer to get you invested in the story.
This is certainly my rationale for searching out good fanfic as well as reading novels, I don't see why OP finds it so crazy...
