Basically? Because one is about a female protagonist (even though is horrifically deviated from its own source material) and one is about a male protagonist. And on internet fandom circles, option B is Bad because omg mens get everything!

Well, in fairness as someone else pointed out, the movie basically follows a 'male power fantasy' plot, while the other isn't. [And, imo, it does follow the source material well - as least as far what little there actually *is* about the Wicked Witch in the original material...And ignoring the two horrid books following it.]

It isn't that cut and dry. Oz is definitely a male fantasy plot - but that's basically what Hollywood churns out on a daily basis. Wicked is supposed to be a commentary on religion and politics, but got turned into a musical about girl power. That the internets are okay with the latter and not the former does not surprise me in any way, shape or form.
