My main issue with this, both on Hook and Milah's parts, was that they both allowed Rum to think Hook had abducted her, and condemned him to believe it was his fault for not being strong enough to fight for her, knowing he couldn't win against Hook and his son would be left an orphan if he tried.

She'd had no qualms about lashing out at him in the past, and she was about to sail away with Hook and never look back; why be additionally cruel and hand him more shame and guilt to live with, instead of just telling the truth?

(If it needs to be said, she did not deserve to die for the above, but it doesn't say much for her basic empathy or Hook's.)

To be honest, the truth would have been more shameful. "I never loved you so I'm leaving with another man." And I think she put up the pretense more or Baelfire's sake than Rumples. "My mother was kidnapped by evil men" is easier to take than "My mother abandoned me to run away with a stranger." At least with the lie, Baelfire didn't have to grow up with the added shame on him that his mother ran away with pirates and left him.

Good point; after all, we know from the later episode that Milah puts a higher value on 'honor' than empathy. But whether she thought it was the better thing to do or not, it was still pretty damn crappy.

(And I do think the way it played out hurt Rum more than the truth would have. There was clearly trouble in paradise by that point; her leaving him would have been painful but not incredibly surprising. Spending the rest of your life knowing you'd abandoned someone you loved to die? That prospect feels a lot worse, at least to me.)
