Poorly Written: Well yes. Sturgeon's Law applies big time to fanfic. Some people can tolerate the middle ground fics that aren't total crap but aren't absolute masterpieces either.

Out of Character: It is the great goal of any aspiring fanfic writer to be In Character, but sometimes a little bending of characterisation helps move the fic along. It's up to you how much bending you tolerate, and at what point it breaks for you.

Self-indulgent: Of course it is! Fanficcers take someone else's creation and do their own thing with it! It's total self-indulgence!

Irrelevant: Well that's your opinion. I find fanfic is relevant to MY interests.

Unoriginal: Well sure, fanficcers aren't making up a whole new world for themselves, but that's not the point of fanfic anyway! Fanfic's point is that people are borrowing other people's setting and characters. And yes, I know a myriad of plots, tropes and other ideas get repeated over and over again in fic. You know? Maybe readers like seeing how different writers tackle familiar themes?

Fanficcers are not scared of original fiction. They like original fiction so much they go and write their own version of the story they're a fan of.

Also, some fanfic writers use fanfic to train their writing skills, working on the characterisation by writing someone else's characters, working on plot in a pre-established world, working on world-building by fleshing out a pre-established world whose details may not be as comprehensive as they wish. And they have fun doing so as well.

Not all original fiction has good characterisation.

At least you understand the appeal of smut, even if you're a pathetic troll who can't understand the appeal of the rest of fanfiction.
