"Fanfiction is usually written with the assumption that there are certain points the author doesn't have to explain to you- plot points, characters, world building, etc. You'd not get as much enjoyment from a fic not set in a fandom you are familiar with and/or invested in."

^THIS. It really drives me up a wall when somebody who hasn't watched/read/whatever a fandom comes in, read fanfic, and complains because there isn't enough explanation. I made the dumb mistake of asking somebody to beta who wasn't in the fandom, and humored them by adding more explanation. The fandom couldn't stand it and felt it was one of my slowest/worst openings ever.
