Maybe it's that it's a lot less stressful when you first start out working on fiction, because you don't realize you're making garbage?

Anything's more stressful when you're aware of and worried about the quality of the end product.

I'm a little confused by this... The fact that you wrote self-insert fanfiction isn't a secret, but the fact that you haven't finished a long fic in years is?

Nothing wrong with admitting either imo, but in my experience, the first one would get you judged a hell of a lot more than the second.

But yeah, it sucks when writing (or doing anything you find fun) starts to feel like a chore. The only thing to do really is to stop stressing about it, if that's possible. There's no point comparing the writer you were then with the writer you are now - maybe you just write shorter things now. Maybe you'll write longer things again in future, when you stop feeling as though you are supposed to because you did in the past. Maybe you naturally get the most enjoyment out of writing fun, no-pressure stories.

Whatever it is that's causing it, I hope that you manage to get past this hurdle and have some fun with fic in future. :)

And wow, over 300k? Respect to you, OP, even if it wasn't something I'd read.

You could think about using the fics you wrote as a jumping off point and revise them. They're both long, so there's bound to be some plot you could build on there. :)

Maybe you could take those old fics and try to make them better? You can even keep the self insert, just write it so it'snot a mary sue. And even if it is, some people like Suefics.
