The wording of my secret makes me sound kinda mean, but I thought Jared was really good in season 2 and from then good only in certain episodes. But since season 6, he's been mostly okay/sometimes pretty bad. While I guess that's down to his ability, I don't think the material has helped him a lot either. Sam's been sidelined a lot for whatever reason.

For Jensen, I don't feel like I've seen anything special from him for a long time. Yes, he can act. But it's not been great recently. The growl thing he does right now is irritating.

I guess my point is that if they were better actors, they'd help make bad writing into something watch-able. But whatever it was that at least made the bad episodes in better seasons is gone. I don't see either of them having hugely successful careers either. If they'd left the show a couple of seasons ago, maybe.

I see this argument all over the place. Many people feel this way; many others, myself included, feel he's constantly the focus while Dean is sidelined/supporting. Regardless of our perspective on this question, Sam has had plenty of material that with a better actor would be great. So once again, I can't blame the writing.

As for Dean/Jensen, I can't think of anything great recently, but I can't think of anything horrible either. He consistently delivers what he's capable of and what's asked of him, which is far better than (as someone pointed out above) Jared's nostril-flaring, as far as I'm concerned. I'll put it this way: I can feel the attempts at acting with Jared. Dean just seems like Dean, and to me, good acting doesn't feel like acting.

I disagree with pretty much...everything here, which is fine, because differing opinions make the world go around, but can I just point out that the ''terrifying growl'' and in fact, everything about how Dean's voice has gotten deeper, is probably due to the fact that Dean is an alcoholic. Voice changes are a pretty common side effect of alcoholism. And depression, come to think of it (although that's less common).

Well, yeah, except they've totally dropped the "Dean is an alcoholic" storyline.

That...doesn't really have anything to do with what I said, though.

DA. Of course it does. You presented alcoholism as the reason for the growling and deep voice, they said that it's been forgotten as a plot. Hence, it isn't much of a reason for the deep voice anymore.

Yes...but just because a storyline is resolved or dropped (I personally think it's still there, they're just not going to deal with it, which... were they ever?) doesn't mean that it never happened. Just because an alcoholic stops drinking doesn't mean that it changes what's happened to them. The character of Dean is an alcoholic. His vocal chords have taking a beating because of it. Just because they've put the focus somewhere else doesn't mean he's not an alcoholic and everything's okay.

The thing is, even if he did get helped and stopped drinking, his voice would still be the same and his vocal chords would still be damaged because...because that's life.

So, yeah. Basically, I get that the ''growl'' may be a bit jarring at first, but I think it's a pretty accurate description of what alcohol and multiple other things (PTSD, depression, etc) do to you.
