Re: Weird comment at work...am I overreacting?

How could that sort of comment be well meaning? It sounds pretty unambiguously rude to me.

They could have intended it in a 'you're better then this move up in the world' sorta way.

That's still an incredibly rude thing to say imo.

Still, that's implying that there's something wrong with it and if OP enjoys their work I don't see the point in saying something like that other than being an asshole.

The fact that you think it might have been meant in a non-rude way means there is pretty much no chance it wouldn't have come off as rude.

I guess as a recent grad, I can see that sort of comment (though hers was terribly executed if this was her intent) as inquiring about a person's future and prospects. That said, I doubt this instance was well meaning.

Is this the kind of job that's considered a temporary type of thing like, for example, retail though? Where I'm from administrative jobs are considered 'respectable' long-term/permanent positions rather than a 'only doing this until I can find something better' like retail (not that I personally think there's anything wrong with retail, just that it's something a lot of people look down on).

Shrug. I think to some people it might be. Not as ubiquitously as retail, but depending on a person's background, they might not consider it a long-term plan. Speaking very personally, I would be surprised if anyone I knew from high school or college chose an administrative job with the intention of permanence. But that comes from the specific cultures of my schools, and the general idea of a permanent administrative job is perfectly respectable to me. It might not be so to this woman (and seems not to be).
