Huh. Catholics who actually do confession... Haven't come across one in a long while, and I live in a Catholic country.

when I was in Catholic school, confession was required... once a month? Or maybe once a week? I don't remember. I do remember that they called my mom when I told them I had nothing to confess LOL

I went to a Catholic school for my entire pre-college education and there wasn't a priest in the school. Nor regular masses. I was openly agnostic and most people didn't care - they certainly never called my parents about it. I think it's a country thing, you know? It seems like American Catholics are a lot stricter.

I think it depends on the Catholic school. Where I live (Europe), students were expected to confess once a week in one particular school. In another, parents threw a fit because menstrual pads were handed out to high school girls by a company seeking to promote their products. But in other schools, it's completely different and much more open to non-Catholics.

SA: Yeah, it sure depends on the school. It also depends if it's a boarding school or not, I suppose. But the observation about being stricter about their practices was meant in general, not for schools only. Here in Brazil most Catholics are either largely non-practitioners or they do practice it but aren't strict about things like impure thoughts and like I said, I know almost no one who actually goes to confession, even among those who go to mass.

Can't you just say "I have had impure thoughts about fictional characters" and leave it at that, or will the priest want all the gory details of who and how often and the rest?

No priest has ever actually asked me for details or posed followup questions. It's actually quite freeing to have someone real and human listen to you tell all about your secrets. It's like Post!Secret, but in real life. :)

I'm not Catholic but I did grow up in a religious household and sometimes think I should feel guilty for thinking of priests (even fictional ones) 'that way'. But I don't really, and I guess fandom has desensitized me to it. (Priest AU's man. Gotta love them.)

A few impure thoughts or fantasies aren't much to worry about imo, but if you really think you need to confess I suggest being vague.

It seems like a large part of this show is to root for a canon OT3, so like...I'm seriously doubting that you're alone here. In fact, I'd say people who AREN'T rooting for it are in the minority.

OP, I'm also a Catholic, although I don't really go to confessions regularly, only like, about once a half year? I usually just say that 'I have thought about impure things' and leave it at that. Of course, there are also times I really wanna just say outright about these 'impure things', but heh, don't really want to disturb the priest, do we, haha.

He will understand. I hope.

When that scene played, I was all: "Oh! Is this actually going to happen right now?" O_O Then, when nothing actually happened, I began to wonder, if it had happened... how would it have worked? Would Athelstan have had sex with Lagertha while Ragnar watched? Or would Athelstan and Ragnar both, I dunno "tag-team" Lagertha? Then again, Ragnar could have just gone to town and freaking DESTROYED Athelstan (in a good, sweaty, intense "Grrrrrrr!!!" kind of way), during which Athelstan would be both conflicted, but ~*obviously*~ enjoying himself with this new sexual experience. All while Lagertha watched, taking her pleasure from the voyeurism? Ugh! Who would have done what with who? I have to know! lol Seriously though...

It sounds like you're only feeling guilty because you feel you should feel guilty - it's a closed circle.

Do you really regret it? Do you think you'll try not to do it again? If the answer is "no," I wouldn't bother bringing it up in confession.

I'm a Catholic myself and I refuse to confess things I don't regret or that I know I'll do again. If I'm not really sorry/going to make an effort, it's trying to cheat God and therefore meaningless.

Oh man, I still have SO MUCH HOPE it will happen. He's slowly getting assimilated into their culture AND their family unit, it's such an unexpectedly adorable subplot for a show like this and I love it (granted, I am not religious). I feel like they could invite him again around the end of the season, and if the network's feeling brave, he'll say yes this time. :D (the History channel doesn't really produce other historical-fiction shows, does it? does The Bible count? I don't watch it so I don't know how much leeway they're giving the actors to actually play a CHARACTER, ya know? in any case, they haven't really carved out an identity for themselves yet in terms of how far they're willing to go with stuff, so I kinda feel at this early stage like anything is possible)
