I like both, but I did really miss child-Rydia after her age up. I wanted her to have a family with Cecil, and Rosa as her adoptive parents. It would have been so adorable.

I don't get your argument that aged Rydia was just fanservice bait. In the official art she hardly look objectified to me, and it's not like a character being a child ever stopped fanartists from making creepy fetishy/fanservice art of them

Anyway, I prefer adult Rydia because child Rydia was a really low level character who was a lot harder to keep alive (especially when it was just her and Cecil in the very beginning of the game after they meet)

I guess your reasoning would make sense if the art in your secret was the official art, and that most of the time you see these characters they weren't super-deforemed sprites...

She was aged up so she could reasonably learn to control her summoning powers well without it being completely BSed and her suddenly good out of nowhere when her introduction was her summoning on accident and being unable to really do it well after that.

This was 1991. No one was posting fap material fanart anywhere. And the sprite/illustrations didn't lend themselves to it particularly.

I love the time skip because FF4 is one of the only FF games where several characters (Cecil and Rydia) "level up" into different classes. It's a great throwback to FF1, where Fighter became Knight, Thief became Ninja, etc.

It's also a fantastic dramatic moment when she saves you in the underworld and you're like "who... OMFG RYDIAAA"

And she got to herb Edge on the regular. It's win-win for everyone.

I agree with this, The OP doesn't seem to be taking into account that recent versions of the game are remakes, with new updated art.

I don't know about the lack of fap material fanart though, there's probably some, somewhere, since even before the DS version came out there was plenty of romance fic for Rydia, so it's possible that fanart - including "fap material" - was around. DS version just gave people more detailed official art to work with.

Meanwhile, I do agree that the timeskip was not a bad thing plotwise, and the OMG RYDIA! surprise was good.

Oh, there definitely was Rydia porn long before any remakes were made, I saw it myself. And I'm sure part of their motivation was to have another of-age girl in the final party. (After all, before that, Rosa was the only non-child female character.) But not too big a part, I'd wager.

Keep in mind how old this game is. The old version had sprites that didn't lend themselves to "sexy", and this may be only my opinion, but I personally think Amano's art doesn't convey "sexy" well either.

Actually I didn't think the DS version's sprites conveyed sexy either, they were too chibi. The FMV models are a different matter, and I don't know if Rydia appears in Dissidia. I presume if she does, the in-game model is pretty good.

But really, I don't think "fap material" was the idea behind the age-up. She was cast as not a very high-powered character as a child, so the age-up was used to excuse a sudden jump in ability, and also pre-introduce some of the higher-powered Summons like Leviathan. It also balanced the male-female ratio slightly by adding another adult female (the ratio was still very in favour of males, but still...).

Fap material is the province of fans, not necessarily the concern of the creators (some creators these day worry about it, but I think the frequency of that is a side effect of the internet that wouldn't have existed when FF4 was written - remember, this is a game from before the internet).
