Well you're in luck! Because right now the Yankees can't buy anyone out, because they've basically stopped spending money. It's pretty funny. (although, yes, it's basically true that money gives a huge advantage in baseball, unfortunately)

In terms of getting used to trades - I think it's part of a larger thing, which is just getting used to all the money things and all the business things that are so much a part of the game these days. If you're a sports fan you kind of have to come to terms with free agency, payrolls, salary tax calculations in NFL and NBA, trades, lockouts and labor negotiations in all American sports, marketing deals. All this financial stuff. The status of loans and the financial capacity of owners in European soccer. If you're going to be a fan of sports in this day and age, you have to come to terms with, in a word, reality, in a way that people didn't in the past.

And it kind of sucks but I think that, in the end, sports is worth it - I think there's enough moments of drama and enough extraordinary moments of human excellence and enough moments of joy and enough beauty to make it worth following - because in the moments when someone does something amazing and spontaneous, all the money, and the whole system, and all the media bullshit, and the whole machinery that surrounds sports - that all ceases to matter. At least for me, sports is able to transcend all that bullshit, and that's ultimately what makes it worth following.

I have to say, what really got me into the game, was being able to go see the hockey games. Relatively, Devils games are still reasonably priced and it's well worth the evening out. For me, there's nothing like hanging out with everyone watching the game.

I briefly talked to friends about the Yankees and they're just laughing at the roster this year because of how many are out on injury too.

It's also why I like college football, there's a different sort of competitiveness amongst the schools and players. It's not scandal free by any means, but it's a much different game and the players are not there as long either.

Yeah, going to games live (or at least watching them with people) is totally awesome. That's actually why I like baseball so much - to me, it's the most enjoyable sport to watch live. You go on a sunny day to a green field, watch a nice ballgame with a nice, relaxed pace - it's lovely. I'll absolutely go to just about any game just to watch it - it's just fun. I went to college in Chicago and Cubs day game tickets were dirt cheap. Just the best way to spend an afternoon if you didn't have anything major going on. Hockey is also a really fun sport to watch live. College football, I'll grant you, is a totally unique experience as well. Although not really my sort of thing personally.

Yeah, the Yankees are just kind of screwed. Old, over-paid, declining, and the ownership isn't willing to burn money anymore. And I can't say I feel bad for them. At all.

I think there's a huge difference between going to the game and watching it on TV. I used to go to a Yankee game every summer with my summer camp and it was amazing, but then I got older and just didn't care for it anymore.

So now a friend and I have decided to do minor league baseball games because they're so much cheaper. Hockey has been awesome and I enjoy going, no matter who is playing. I went to a large football university, so the tailgating experience was also a big part of why I enjoyed the games so much.

I don't feel bad for them at all. I also can't stand a good majority of their fans around here.

thread OP - Yeah, I feel the same way about junior hockey - less so the schools than the players though. it's a different sort of energy, seeing excited kids playing their dream sport with the potential of a pro career - all before the big salaries make some of them complacent. :P

also jealous of your cheap hockey tickets - they generally start at $80 for nosebleeds here. :(

I've been really enjoying following hockey and I feel like once I get more attached to the players, I will feel the same way you are about trades.

The nosebleeds here are usually about $30-35. If we get a Groupon deal, it was $35 and we got a tshirt. With the Boy Scout deal, it's $38 plus a hot dog and soda.

OMG can I just say if I was a Flames fan, I'd be incredibly upset. GOING TO PITTSBURGH? Seriously, Pittsburgh? Ugh, now it's just one more reason to completely hate Pittsburgh.

for most of last night the rumour was Boston, which made me even MORE ill - but I can't stand Pittsburgh either. I can tolerate them a smidgeon more than the Bruins though.

Honestly now I just want him to win something there, even if I hate the team.

I just generally dislike all Boston teams, but Pittsburgh is my least favorite for hockey.
