It is less about the characters themselves and more the writers and producers reinforcing that media meme (which is a pretty offensive one) by creating the situation of Evil Adoptive (single) Parent who needs to be swept aside by the returning repentant birth mother who is the only true mother. Its a meme the media and tv uses far too often, and is often used by abusive birth parents to regain access to kids over the wishes of adoptive and foster parents to the detriment of the kids. Its the assumption presented that all adopted kids must simply want their birth mother and be prepared to seek them out to cast off the adoptive parents. It gets thrown in the faces of adoptive kids and parents a lot.

There must have been a better way to kick off the plot than to wheel out that old tired and offensive trope. It isn't the characters, it is the situation.
