This actually makes sense to me. I get where you're coming from, I think. "Stay" gives me the feeling that she's eager and willing and even desperate to stay in this broken, toxic relationship that's slowly destroying her.

LTWYL, to me, isn't necessarily condoning the behaviors it's talking about/describing. It's not saying "this is what I want, let's do this forever". It's just sort of putting it out there, "this is how it is between us". If that makes sense.

TLDR: "Stay" seems pro-abusive relationship to me. LTWYL seems more to be just describing it without condoning or condemning. I get it, OP.

Honestly, to me LTWYL seems to actively acknowledge how fucked up the situation is.

You're right. I agree, really. I just mean, I could see how some people could take issue with it because it definitely insinuates neither party is ending that fucked up relationship anytime soon :/

But I agree, it definitely indicates that this is NOT a healthy situation at all.

^This. Disclaimer: I haven't heard the other song. But LTWYL doesn't feel like it's romantizing at all the fucked up relationship. It's describing it, it outright states it can end even in death at the end in the most ugly way. And they are stuck that way, and it's all-around an awful thing.

And half if LTWYL is sung from the abuser's point of view, humanizing him. You can hear his guilt and determination to change even as you know he never will. That's a pretty big part of why people stay in abusive relationships; you can tell the abuser's sincere and you remember a time when s/he was nothing but good, and you're sure that that time will come again. It reminds you how dangerous that line of thinking is. Stay is that line of thinking.

Kind of off-topic, but I always thought LTWYL was about two equally abusive people.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. This is more clear, however, in part 2: you hit me twice, yeah, but who’s countin’?
I may have hit you three times, I’m startin’ to lose count

Yeah, pretty much. LTWYL is sorta... exploring the fucked-up dynamic of an abusive relationship, and Stay is just justifying and delusion.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not disagreeing with you but I've heard "Stay" a few times and looked up the lyrics and didn't get the impression it was about an abusive relationship. Just curious why you think it so? Maybe something went over my head lol.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, all of this! Also why I hate stay and love LTWYL.

I'm pretty sure it's that "Love The Way You Lie" is so much more honest about the whole thing. I can't speak to anything about "Stay" specifically, because I never make it through an entire verse without channel-flipping away, but songs that don't really acknowledge that the relationship is fucked up just drive me up the wall.

The bridge does kinda.

LTWYL Parts 1 and 2 helped me heal from my past abusive relationship, simply because I was like "Oh my GOD. Someone GETS IT. And they're not HIDING from the fact that it's fucked up but you love each other somehow anyway and it's completely toxic and horrible and someone needs to get the fuck out and stop destroying each other but you just... can't."

Therapeutic. I've never heard "Stay" but I'd probably feel the same way you do. :/ Particularly as someone who took a long time to get out of a "but I love you" stage post-abusive-relationship-breakup, and knowing how horrible it is to be in that place, it sounds like it's a glorification of an awful, awful mindset (that I'm aware not everyone can get out of, particularly without help)

Just listened to both songs

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-03-30 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so, while I have heard both of them before, I actually went and looked them up and listened to them in order to be able to take a good look at them. And while many people have already stated the reason upthread, I think liking Love The Way You Lie and not liking Stay makes sense.

Love The Way You Lie tends to acknowledge the hectic mental and emotional processes that come with a situation like abuse, where as Stay sort of flattens out that angle, bordering on romanticizing it. Both songs end implying a victim staying with their abuser, but only the former acknowledges this as Not A Good Thing. The latter...doesn't.

How is it a love letter to Rhianna, when she wrote not one word of that song? I'm not denying that everything in her life revolves around Chris Brown, including her marketing, but it's not an actual love letter okay? Mikky and someone else wrote the song, so. I can't tell if you have a problem with the context and that she's singing it at all, or if you think it's more than her producers giving her a song.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't seem hypocritical to me. At the time LTWYL came out I remember being surprised what a nuanced and well-done look at dynamics of abusive relationships it was. Not painting the abuser as a monster went a good way towards explaining why people stay in these situations. Because the love and affection is (seems?) sincere. And then in the last verse you get the reminder that staying can have dire consequences. It's kind of subverting, music-wise and lyric-wise, the love song genre, to show that it can end in hell. It's very self-aware, IMO.

But now it seems that it was all Eminem deconstructing what's going on in these kind of relationships. I remember that he had been clean and in therapy for some time when the song came out, and you can see that he'd really taken a hard look at a lot of the choices/mistakes he made in the past. Rihanna didn't write either Stay or LTWYL, but LTWYL seemed to speak for her as well. And perhaps it still does, but unfortunately in a "still trapped in this toxic situation" way...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point about how much of it was driven by Eminem. I think not only is LTWYL very nuanced and honest, but the fact that Eminem is involved makes me, personally, more confident that said nuance and honestly is intentional, not a mistake or something I'm reading onto it. So much of his music in the latter part of his career is about deconstructing and reflecting on the mistakes he glorified in the early part, so it's easy for me to believe that LTWYL is self-aware. Whereas I just don't know about Rhianna.
