and to all my friends it seems as though i'm going to automatically starting drinking and partying- even though they know I never enjoyed it.
What else should I expect from others now that I'm an 'adult' now, F!S?

If you have not been asked already, you will probably be asked to buy cigarettes or porn mags. To which you go, "No and don't you have the internet, you lazy bum? Find your own porn. It's free."

My mom tried to get me to buy a lottery ticket when I turned 18. I told her I didn't want to. She actually got pissed at me. Because I wouldn't buy myself a lottery ticket.

Yep. And you are going quickly learn that the older someone is, the more they are likely to have a vice. Now here's the thing about people and their vices. Most of the times, they don't like to do it alone. So, if their personal vice is smoking. They'll want you to smoke too. If their vice is drinking? They'll want you to pull up a stool. Same with gambling, drugs or the million of other vices.

It's never about you. It's about them.

And, I agree, adults are weird. I should know. I am one.

The usual 'be responsible, go to school, get a job, buy a house, find a spouse, get some kids, remember to get insurance, invest,.., yadda yadda'. Just ignore the parts that don't interest you, and you'll be fine. Welcome to adulthood, it doesn't change you much.

I uh, wouldn't really know about that whole 'adult' thing though. One of my friends who turned 18 recently said 'I'm 18! I can finally watch *lowers voice* porn!' so you can guess that the people here don't necessarily even know what partying and boozing should constitute.

My friends didn't think this but all of my acquaintances did when I turned 21. I have a solution for you. When they start in on it just say "No". Continue to say "no" until they shut the fuck up about it and start talking about something interesting. It worked for me. I also added certain faces depending on how annoying they were. A confused face for the people who just don't get it, a mostly blank but irritated face for the pushy people, and a disdainful face for the assholes.

Anyway, it will pass... in a year.

As for other things? Depends on where you live, really.

I think you should expect a lot of double standards. People are going to start whiplashing between YOU'RE AN ADULT NOW and OH YOU'RE YOUNG YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT depending on what they want you to do.

There's some truth to it - you ARE young and you don't know shit. And you ARE an adult now, so your responsibilities do increase. Just be aware of the balance between the two, and don't let people use either as an excuse to start lecturing you on stupid shit. You're a person first, and young/an adult second.

As for your friends, my guess is they already drink and party a lot? Yeah, don't expect them to let up. If you don't want to party and get blind drunk, then you're not indulging their vices, and inevitably they have to stop and think about said vices and why you don't want to indulge them. Then they have to consider that maybe they're being excessive, and that makes them feel bad. People don't like feeling bad, and the easiest solution is that you shut up and have a drink already.

Just be firm in saying no, and start having some good excuses on hand for high pressure situations. If you do go to a party, have an exit strategy in case you get uncomfortable.

That second paragraph is very wise.

Expect less presents on your birthday and holidays. Your close friends and immediate family will probably continue, but casual friends and particularly distant family like aunts and uncles will decide you're too old to need presents any more.

I remember how shocked I was when I saw my younger cousins receive presents from everyone, while only my parents and grandparents came through for me. *sigh*

(I LOVE presents, even now in my 30s. They're tangible proof that someone cares at least a little bit.)

Expect the first question from friends and family who haven't seen in awhile to always be, "So are you seeing anybody?" as if the only thing we do as adults is try to find a life partner.
