On the specifically LGBT thing, I have mixed feelings. There are a lot of things I love about shipping non-canon - chief among them the fact that it means there's no one version of how they get together, so I can start afresh with every new fic. That's awesome.
On the other hand, we're so far behind on the variety of relationship for which canon-shipping is even possible. I said upthread that none of my hetships have become canon, but that's largely been a matter of bad luck. Pairings with similar dynamics in other shows have totally lucked out. But when it comes to the characters I femslash I don't think any of the dynamics I enjoy in fic have ever actually happened in any serial media I've ever managed to find. So having one of those ships become canon would sort of change my entire relationship to fandom and to the entertainment industry.

I'm going to sleep shortly, I just wanted to say that I in no way meant that I don't want any more LGBT representation in media. I just want them to be represented from the start of a show, or with the intent of the writers, not just because fandom wants them to be together.
And to add my own thing in this, if bisexuality gets slightly more attention in media I will be so happy! Seriously you have no idea how many times I've yelled at my TV "damn you character you are bisexual!" the only thing that is missing is them saying it, instead of having characters whom jump from being heterosexual to gay, and then back to heterosexual and so on.
Last example is Shameless US, where one character is in a lesbian relationship (though she have had heterosexual relationships before) then they break up, she is in a heterosexual relationship again, then a lesbian one. She is still talked about as Lesbian. Which is seriously annoying, I get that people are allowed to define themselves as whatever they want to, but this is television.
