Why are you watching that thing you don't like?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Not a rhetorical question. There are quite a few things I watch (and read) even though I stopped liking it. Or things I've gone to see even though I didn't expect to like it.

I am, however, interested in the REASONS for why people do this. For me personally, my examples are all cases of "I'm too emotionally invested in the characters' arcs to quit" mixed with a few instances of "Maybe it'll get better" and one example of "But I need to know how this mystery turns out". What are your reasons? And if you're comfortable mentioning them, which fandoms?

Usually "It's bad but it's interesting."

But I don't watch that many things that I don't like on some level. Plenty of things that are bad but that I like, but not much that I just don't like.

I do this when something's so-bad-it's-good entertaining, like Caprica -- there's a good example

How I Met Your Mother. The humor is mediocre at best (and downright offensive at worst), the MC is the least engaging character on the show, and the whole thing's just been going on for way too fucking long. But we'll probably still keep watching it because who the fuck is the mother. She sounds really fucking awesome from what all we've heard about her, and I want to know why the fuck she ends up with a douche like Ted.

Re: Why are you watching that thing you don't like?

I'm similar but with one exception: even though present!Ted is a douche, future!Ted has never seemed to be anything other than a wonderful self-aware guy with a wonderful worldview and who loves and appreciates his friends and the Mother like no one's business, even if he's more than a bit too TMI. So I don't have any doubt that he will eventually get better (even if it never happens on the actual show).

I'm fascinated to see IF the mother DOES make him better or not on the actual show, since apparently she's gonna be a regular or recurring character in season 9.

I keep watching The Big Bang Theory solely because I find Sheldon, Amy, and Bernadette interesting characters on some level (even though I don't like what the writers tend to do with them), and think Raj is cute.

I also go to see a ton of movies that I don't think I will like. In that case, my reason is invariably, "My dad wants to see it, and I don't want to disappoint him by refusing to go."

I'm watching Vikings because of George Blagden. I find the show completely boring but I'm willing to put up with it for him.

And Glee... I have no idea why I'm still watching that, to be honest. It used to be because of Sebastian, but he hasn't been in it for ages. I think Adam is pretty much my only other reason for watching these days, but from what I hear about recent episodes (I haven't caught up yet), things aren't going great for him either.

For Supernatural, I just want to stare at Jensen Ackles' beautiful face and watch the ~homoerotic~ moments between him and Cas. I don't care for Sam, and they've killed off all the female characters I liked (or I guess it would better to say all the female characters), and I don't find the plot all that engaging. Crowley gets on my nerves too.

So yeah, I pretty much watch it for the pretty boys and the ho yay.

Sometimes it's a completionist thing. That's how the Prequel Trilogy for Star Wars was for me. "I am a fan of [franchise], so I feel obligated to see all of [franchise], even the bits I find shitty and un-enjoyable." So I can see how if someone started out liking a TV series and then it took a downward turn, they might feel like they HAVE to finish it out, even if they hate it, because they'd already started and now they're committed, somehow.

Or it could be a case of, "I hate this entire series (except for this one character/plot-thread/element which makes it worth slogging through)."

Because occasionally, Supernatural comes up with some interesting plot thread or character development. It usually goes away pretty fast, but it still happens. And I still like Sam and Dean a lot.

I'm still watching Luther because watching Idris Elba say ridiculous things in a very gloomy and intense way is hella entertaining.

I'll go to any movie my SO wants to see, which invariably is something I don't want to see. I even make an attempt to not say what I thought of it and keep discussion to things like "I'm glad you liked it," and "What did you like best," or "What was you favorite part?"

I just don't like almost any of the movies that have come out in the last few years and don't want to take away from his enjoyment of them.

i watched all of merlin because i became invested while watching season 1 during the night shift at a hospital. i always realized it was corny and sometimes terrible but kept watching it because it was comforting and distracting, much like alcohol but without the hangover

what a hot-ass mess... god i miss it

HIMYM, because some part of me still really loves all of the characters and wants to see how the story ends.

Project Runway, because its turned into an absolute trainwreck the last few seasons but I keep hoping they'll get it back on track (and Dmitry last season was fucking adorable). Plus I like reading the snarky feedback from other loyal watchers.

1. To find out what the hype is about (and it's short and enjoyable enough to sit through the whole thing).
2. To find out what the wank is about.
3. I learnt somehow that it has that one scene which probably caters to my guilty pleasure spot (I'm not sure if 'kink' is a broad enough term, though kinks count) and I want to see if it's so (have been losing interest in this lately, stopped paying off for some reason).
4. I have to read it for the college (lol not funny, heh. I actually adore classics and usually end up liking every book to some degree, but frankly, there's always one percent or so which just leaves me less than amused).

USUALLY when I do this, I actually did like it when I started, but it had outstayed its welcome (because the writing has gone downhill, it's still good, but has shifted to a focus I wasn't interested in, or it hasn't shifted, and I've gotten tired of it), because I want to find out how it turns out. (If they drag it out too long, I generally just say 'fuck it' and drop it, anyway, figuring they'll never give me the resolution I want.)

Occasionally, I'll read or watch something for the So Bad It's Good factor.

Grimm.

I find the ideas and universe interesting, but it's so poorly executed for the most part that I don't really like the show. I keep hoping, however.

Plus, I have a huge crush on Sasha Roiz. But that's really a minor detail.

I keep watching SVU because I'm invested in the characters (and also because I have a raging crush on Mariska Hargitay). At this point I prefer the fic to the canon, but I keep up with the canon so that I don't get confused while reading fic.

Also because this franchise has been on TV for basically as long as I've been alive, so that kind of motivates me to stick it out until the bitter end.

Trainwreck Syndrome - it's so incredibly bad that I simply must see it go down in flames. It's even better when you see the fans just lap it up or try to justify it.
