Oh man, if this is possible I will partly feel like a prize fool for not having realised before, but mostly just love you forever. I thought that only worked for tags, and that categories didn't work like tags. But I might have given up too soon. I shall go and try again.

You can exclude Multi, F/F, M/M, etc. with the Search Within Results function. AO3's search function is a thing of beauty and I'm so glad it's back. *snuggles search function close to heart*

Help with an complicated search?

Okay - I'm having amazing revelations about how stupid I've been over the AO₃ search function, and this is awesome. However, I know the way I'm trying to use it is very counter-intuitive. I wonder if somebody could give me a hand sorting some things out.

So "-Multi" didn't seem to work for me, but I've gotten the same result by ticking F/F and adding the additional tags "-M/M -Het -Other".

I ran that search across the entire archive to see all the femslash. I'm now trying to whittle out some of the bigger fandoms. Entering "-Homestuck" in Edit Search worked. However, I'm having trouble filtering out fandoms with longer names. For instance, how would I edit the search to eliminate "Teen Wolf (TV)"? The fandom suggestions don't offer a "-" option, but manually typing in "-Teen Wolf (TV)" b0rked the search.

Anyone smarter than me know how make it work?

Try -"Teen Wolf" -- put the minus sign outside the quotes, the entire title inside.

Maybe the problem was that you put the - inside the quotation marks? (I'm assuming that you typed in the quotation marks, because otherwise it should have worked) If you enter it like this:

-Multi

it should sort out all fics with Multi (note though that the icon for Multi still shows up if an author ticked the boxes for two different pairing types, like M/M and F/F).

For the Teen Wolf question, typing in

-"Teen Wolf"

should get rid of all Teen Wolf fics.

This is all true. The other point to make is that I don't THINK you need to include the media format when you're filtering shows; "Teen Wolf" should work rather than "Teen Wolf (TV)" or whatever.
