Slightly OT question: does anybody really ever claim that Megatron and Starscream are canonically in some kind of romantic and/or BDSM relationship? I've only ever encountered the BDSM stuff as a fic trope, but these types of secrets always seem to attract people complaining about actually misinterpreting canon, so this secret seems like a good place to ask.

I've seen it a few places before, generally with "cultural differences!" and "giant robots can take more damage!" as an excuse, and I think I've even seen "an elaborate ruse" used once or twice.

Especially Transformers Prime is all over tumblr making excuses, and I gotta say, as the child of a wifebeater, it makes me physically ill that so many people think this is appropriate behavior.

I don't know how much interest you have in digging into it, but the fluffy Megatron/Starscream shippers fester like a boil under the surface of Transformers fandom. I'm sure I could find some with a minimum of effort.

Yes they do, though mostly on tumblr. Most that I've seen fall juuuust short of calling it absolutely canon. They'll instead claim it's their interpretation of canon (that happens to be absolutely correct of course, how dare you question it). Measin_caosin or whatever her name was, she was a big player in that for a while before she disappeared, but I've witnessed minor scuffles about the subject on tumblr since then.

One person who claimed to be an expert on bdsm started talking about Decepticon culture and bdsm culture and something about how Megatron beats Starscream all the time because Decepticon culture values strength and Starscream wouldn't respect him anymore if Megatron didn't "put him in his place" and tried to say that in irl bdsm the relationship is over if the sub "can't respect" the dom.

That person was a special kind of dumb, to be sure.

Can't say much about "Deception culture," whatever the hell that is, but I'm fairly sure that if one person can't respect the other, the relationship is on the rocks anyway, BDSM regardless.

But damn do I want to slap that person and then sit them down and lecture them.

Anon, the short answer is yes. The hardcore Meg/SS shippers who have been in fandom for a while insist not only that they are in an entirely consensual BDSM relationship, it's that way in all canons. Safewords and everything. I've seen it insisted on by these shippers even in G1. Which was, you recall, a 1980s cartoon with precisely no slash canon pairings. What few canon pairings they have are exclusively het.

In other words, Meg/SS shippers are batfuck.

But not quite as delusional as the OP/SS shippers.
